I had enough scraps left over from the jacket and skirt that I wanted to make a simple, untailored vest. #TheWashableLinenVest got swiftly out of hand, but used linen from the skirt and jacket, as well as the hem facing twill from #TheBurntOchreSkirt (photos posted yesterday) and the only thing I had to get for it was matching buttons. The pattern was kind of a disaster, but it turned out nice.

I have finished both #TheWashableLinenVest and #TheBurntOchreSkirt but there is cat hair, cat food crumbs and dust everywhere and my body is too tired to vacuum and nobody's available to do it for me... So. No pictures at this time. But they are done, so that's nice

Meanwhile, I've finished six of perhaps the tidiest buttonholes in my life, and have surrendered to my desire to use backing buttons (is there an actual word for these?) for #TheWashableLinenVest

If nobody ever told you how much nicer it is to sew on buttons using a backing button, I'm telling you. They'll also prevent wear on your clothes, making them last longer... and are easy to just cut off versus unpicking, if you ever need to move the buttons.

I should have called this the "Oh fuck what now... Okay, alright" vest 😂 I swear I'll never use a commercial pattern again, even as the base for another style made out of scraps, it has been giving me so much trouble!

I've fixed most of the fit issues but the top-stitching of the back neck made it too tight, so I added this little notch thing, to mirror the front. Shall be seen if I'll have the spoons to put one on the back hem to match.

Because I have absolutely no chill with how clothes I make fit me (ill-fitting second hand is fine) I went ham on #TheWashableLinenVest yesterday, fully transforming the fish darts into new horizontal seams... And now that I got the vest to fit rather beautifully, it's slightly more snug than is quite convenient... So I need to take out some more room at the side seams. 😂 There's only a bit, but even a centimetre more around makes a surprising difference, and I don't want to change the button placement to do it. Ah, sewing.
I've bag lined #TheWashableLinenVest and have had to fight with the lining so much I really do think this may be the last time I bag line *anything* in the modern method. Sure, it's faster to do it by machine than by turning the hems individually by hand and joining them... but at what cost. I am so stressed and the corners aren't even that sharp and I'll probably have to top stitch it to make it lie flat

Also! When you fuck up during pattern drafting and/or use a pattern that isn't perfectly suited to you, and the front of your garment sags like this:
You can put in what I believe is called a fish dart. It was super common when tailors made vests and riding jackets for women using men's pre-embroidered pattern pieces.

You just pinch a little dart in there (or a huge one in my case) and there you go. I'll add how it looks as a pattern modification in a bit, currently hindered by cat

I was restless, cranky and tired yesterday, so I did the only thing that would soothe my brain wrinkles: start up a sewing project, #TheWashableLinenVest, the main qualities of which are that it's washable, sans any interfacing or boning, and that I've cut it out of scrap linen from the linen jacket and skirts.

Made the first welt pocket since 2008(?) for it yesterday! Not the finest, but it will do. I used this scrap lawn for the invisible pocket inner, to match the front lining.
