David Bowie was aware of Tod Haynes and “Velvet Goldmine” from its inception and he did give his blessing for the project but he didn’t grant name, music or life rights to the team because he had plans to make his own, similar project in the future. Sadly, that never materialized but at least we have “Velvet Goldmine” and the recent, extremely excellent David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream” which you can watch on HBO Max or purchase from Criterion Collection #MusComEnt#TheVelvetGoldmine
And you can’t have 70s Glam Rock without some ladies: Mandy Slade (Toni Collette)= Angie Bowie (David Bowie’s first wife) Shannon (Emily Woof) = Coco Schwab (David Bowie’s longtime assistant) #MusComEnt#TheVelvetGoldmine
I hope y’all enjoyed those few, beautiful opening moments b/c that’s as calm as this film gets b/c “Velvet Goldmine” is about the 70s glam rock scene and features characters who are barely legally disguised David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Jobriath and Marc Bolan, etc #MusComEnt#TheVelvetGoldmine
