G-Nitro’s Daily Music Wrap-Up – 1/15/26

The World Of G-Nitro
For this week’s #ThursdayBooksandBeer I’m reading the 1963 dystopian classic, The Wall, by Austrian writer Marlen Haushofer, republished under the ‘Vintage Earth’ imprint. It’s accompanied by an ‘In the Pines’ Hazy IPA from Margaret River Beer Co. The name is an appropriate connection to the setting of the novel and its environmental focus as well as (I imagine) a nod to the album by WA music legends The Triffids. Griffin is drinking the same beer and reading Thomas Pynchon’s epic Gravity’s Rainbow. “I couldn’t see what he was so frightened of. At this point the road emerged from the gorge, and as far as I could see it lay deserted and peaceful in the morning sun.” #reading #literature #dystopia #environment #craftbeer #thetriffids #inthepines

The Triffids, Calenture, 1987 on Island Records

This was actually the fourth LP for the Australian alt-rock (post-punk?) band The Triffids, but likely their best known to US audiences (like me). The literary-ness of being named after The Day of the Triffids and using (and defining on the sleeve – this was well before google) a word like Calenture appeared to the precocious teen me:

Calenture: Tropical fever or delirium suffered by sailors after long periods away from land, who imagine the seas to be green fields and desire to leap into them

At this point The Triffids were David McComb, Robert McComb, Alsy MacDonald, Graham Lee, Martyn Casey, and Jill Birt, with production credits spread across Adam Peters, David McComb, Gil Norton, and Craig Leon.

My copy via Cheapo Records in Minneapolis MN

I've lived in a few places now and so knowing quite where #MyLand is, is becoming hazy. #JukeboxFridayNight

//The sky was big and empty
My chest filled to explode
I yelled my insides out at the sun
At the wide open road//

I was always put off by this record pretty quick.....But just bought it again for €2 and put it on while cutting the vegetables for tonight's soup. So, couldn't put it off right away. And after track 3 things get better and from track 7 and onwards it even gets very good. And the funny thing is my €2 copy skips in the last song so now I have to score a better copy but hallelujah for the existence of SoulSeek.....

"I live under glass in the British museum
I am wrinkled and black, I am ten thousand years
I once lost in business, I once lost in love
I took a hard fall, I couldn't get up"

Music and Meaning: The RBHS Jukebox

Often, on one of the first seriously hot days of summer I listen to the album #BornSandyDevotional by #TheTriffids
It's not quite a tradition, but very close to it.

#Music

This one for the road between my childhood and adulthood. I always think its about the #Nullarbor. The term being Latin and yes folks a mate of mine managed to reverse his car into a tree whilst crossing. He was a high achiever in such things.

Well, the drums rolled off in my forehead
And the guns went off in my chest
Remember carrying the baby just for you
Crying in the wilderness
