#medieval style boards are threaded onto the book's cords before covering. We really like how the beveled boards are recessed into the spine.

Have a look at one of your modern flat-spined #hardback #books and you'll see how it droops.

We only cut corners literally in our studio: to neatly bridge a 2.5mm board and a 1mm spine fold on #medieval #books, #bookbinders must bevel the corners of the book boards next to the spine.

The entire edge is beveled to help it open easily.

Rounding and backing #TheTombGuardians by #PaulGriffiths in the studio today.

When you bind a book #medieval style with cords, the foreedge of the book will lean out. You can preempt this by rounding the spine so it pulls back. For a longer life, the spine is then backed: hammered into an arch shape.
