One of the shows I watched in entirety between episodes of #TheStrain was the Korean horror drama, If Apps Could Kill.
I thought it was going to be a simple slasher type offering--not that I have any aversion to those if they're well done--but it was much deeper than that.
Central to the plot was Korean shamanism. There was an episode that covered an escape from a spirit world, and it was fairly accurate to what I know of shamanic vision travel. Really well done and compelling. I then had to go down a rabbit hole online about Korean shamanism which was really educational. And I'm glad to see that it's popular to this day. I'd much prefer the world was full of shamans than Xtian pastors.
The show was well done, scary in the right ways, and far, far better than I thought it would be.
The other main sticking point with #TheStrain for me is the combat. You can't touch the vampire blood because of the infection mechanic but these people are using melee weapons. And not pikes or halberds, but swords and Bowie knives.
Hand to hand combat is messy. Using short blades in close combat pretty much guarantees you're going to get hit with blood spatter. But they're mowing down these vampires like blood spatter physics doesn't exist.
I'm having trouble suspending my disbelief over this.
I generally love stuff by Guillermo del Toro so I started watching The Strain on #AMCPlus. I had no idea he'd co-written some books and turned them into a TV show.
Unfortunately I'm really struggling to finish the show because the main protagonist, Ephraim Goodweather, is such a horrible human being. He's just such an asshole. He's a terrible parent, a terrible partner, and I just loathe him. He started out awful and it's just been downhlll from there.
I've bogged down so much in Season 2 that I'm taking breaks in between episodes to watch entire runs of other shows.
I want to finish it because the story is interesting, and the take on vampires is rather unique. But damn, this alcoholic, abusive, egotistical main character is making it so fucking difficult to do. He's not even a good anti-hero. He's just a chud.
