I found this book due to an episode of a favorite architectural podcast of mine, About Buildings and Cities. I trusted their recommendation but didn’t want to listen to their thoughts until I read the book. This is incredible. The story is written in a close third-person, meaning we really only understand what is transpiring through the eyes/understanding of the main character. And Jocelin, dean of the cathedral, is over their skis and blinded by faith. This turns into a disorienting narrative with almost psychedelic imagery at times. I don’t think it was Golding’s intention to be obtuse - but instead to pull the reader into a mind that is equally confused by power, metaphysical inspiration and illness. The first half lays the ground work so that the second half can explode with a series of conflicts, climaxes and excitement. It’s a wild ride, praise be.
