It's made me want to rewatch #TheSpineofNight (listen to #CRRRRS pod 501).

So while I think โ€˜Fire And Iceโ€™ is worth tracking down for fans of animation, if you want some really potent material, thereโ€™s โ€˜The Spine Of Nightโ€™.

Like โ€˜Fire And Iceโ€™ it is rotoscoped fantasy animation, but much harder edged in all facets.

Hereโ€™s a fun article by Morgan Galen King, one of the writer/directors of the epic rotoscoped sword & sorcery animated film The Spine of Night, about his earlier short work starring barbarian hero Mongrel.

Mongrel

For me, it all started with the barbarian-who-kinda-looked-like-my-dad: Mongrel.

Shudder Saturday: The Spine Of Night (2021)

Movies young and old, from fright flicks to cracking comedies, from the latest blockbusters to the rarest cult treats.

Last night I watched 'The Spine Of Night'.

It's homage to a very specific style of animation called 'rotoscoping', where the animated frames are created from reference film of live actors. The most notable examples are from Ralph Baskshi in his animated adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings (1978) and also the Frank Frazetta collaboration 'Fire and Ice' (1983).

So 'The Spine Of Night' is similar to this, but in the more extreme Fantasy style. The main character, voiced by Lucy Lawless, is essentially completely nude the entire time. The physical violence is quite extreme.

But that's somewhat the point of the film. A psychedelic visual feast in an odd style that's rarely seen these days.
