Just listening to Duncan Greive's 7 May special edition of The Fold on the government's decision to abolish the BSA;

https://thespinoff.co.nz/podcasts/the-fold

I stand corrected on my suggestion that the BSA could theoretically accept complaints against podcasts. Greive mentioned that "on demand" services are specifically exempted from BSA jurisdiction. Confining them to regulating only live broadcasts.

Siouxsie Wiles: Menstrual cups are a great invention. But how safe are they?

They're a game-changer in terms of reducing waste – but only a handful of contradictory studies, carried out under artificial conditions, have been done on their safety.

Predictions, predictions, what could go wrong?

I have to assume the complainers have also decided based on strong evidence of looking both ways and not being hit that the effort spent looking is wasted? All those predictions about getting hit by careless motorists were wrong, are wrong, and will continue to be wrong?

Severe weather warnings aren’t predictions – why do we judge them as such?

The issue is not that the data is wrong, it is that probability is being treated as prediction, and then judged accordingly.

He's just received another seven Aotearoa Music Award nominations, but Marlon Williams only needs the Taite to achieve one of the hardest, rarest and least known feats in New Zealand music.

@aly "Predator Free 2050" is controversial with the usual suspects, so it's promoting the idea. Technically it's government policy so DOC can promote it, but since we only have 5-ish opposition parties right now (h/t #TheSpinoff) DOC is very quietly reminding voters that if they want action they need to, you know, vote.

And I suspect the last line being applicable beyond carnivorous animals isn't an accident.

I wonder if the Free Speech Union is deliberately missing the point?

"we’ve got concerns about this. As a regulator, why do you think you have the authority to require this knowledge?’”

Because that's what regulatory bodies DO. To be an architect you need to know X, Y, and Z. The regulator is the body that decides what exactly X,Y, and Z are.

The union is worried people are being told what to think and say, and has zeroed in on the medical council, architects board and nurses council.<br />

"Dilworth Karaka, the quiet Herbs giant who gave Aotearoa its protest soundtrack" by Liam Rātana

"Those who knew him describe a storyteller, listener, league tragic, family man, and someone more interested in the kaupapa than in pretentiousness. Karaka mattered, because Herbs mattered. Herbs mattered because they gave shape to truths this country often preferred to avoid. "
