This is why I've always thought it dubious the claim the "new South" was better or more "honest" for Black communities than northern cities, culturally. Underneath it all has always been Jim Crow culture and the fact that the powerful down there see the black community as slaves to be manipulated without worry. This type of thing would never fly in Illinois, or even Wisconsin --- cities would burn. It's 1950 again.

Opinion | The Betrayal of Black Voters Threatens Our Democracy

The sweeping effort to dismantle Black-majority congressional districts in the South will have far-reaching consequences for all Americans, and for our democracy.

This is the BEST documentary I have seen on the myth of modern-day "Southern charm" - angry old white people struggling to pay for and maintain massive crumbling houses by selling a story.

They are full of resentment to anyone interested in the truth.

Producing this documentary with no narrator and letting people's words stand on their own was very powerful. I grew up with people like this and they radicalized me.

I've been listening to Wright Thompson's book The Barn. It's very hard to listen to, and an excellent book.

One thing led to another, and I found this snippet from the writer in an Atlantic article. As a southerner, I cannot tell you how biting and insightful this is.

I just finished The South, without realising it's the first of four books. This makes me really happy, because The South is absolutely sublime. I've loved most of Tash Aw's books that I've read, but this is really special. Can't wait for the next one!

Interesting that they mainly appear to be located in #TheSouth & in #RedStates.

Is this just a coincidence or are there specific reasons why this is the case?🤔
