This is odd because Harrison’s #DaysOfStarlight seemed quite anti-racist, and whilst the main character of #TheQuietEarth turns out to be racially prejudiced, he’s meant to be an unsympathetic protagonist.

"[The early pioneers of science] ... dedicated their lives to driving back the frontiers of knowledge, for the benefit of mankind.

But in the modern world that's no longer valid. Because now they push back the frontiers of science for the benefit of the joker that's paying, and no one else. And the joker that's paying makes sure that no one else can have that knowledge."

The Quiet Earth (with Serge Bodnarchuk) | Movie Oubliette

Serge Bodnarchuk of Cold Crash Pictures joins us to explore... New Zealand! Yes, Dan's homeland – but it's a bizarre alternate universe version of NZ, and not just because it's 1985. Zac Hobson wakes up naked in a motel bed to discover he may be the last man on Earth. He gets to engage in a few fantasies: driving a train, moving into a mansion, running rampant through a church wearing a nightie and brandishing a shotgun... until he meets Joanne and Api. The three quickly discover the commonality between them that could unlock the mystery of the quiet Earth, but is Zac secretly responsible for what happened? And is it going to happen again and erase them all? We wander this largely forgotten land to decide if this little-seen sci-fi gem from down under should be out and proud in its nightie! In the 80's, I often caught bits of a #movie while flipping through #cable channels, but never bothered to find out what it was until I caught the very end, and the visuals and music hit me with their haunting power.

I soon forgot the title, and in the 2000's it took me a while to re-find it because the end was my only clue. When I found it, I couldn't find a way to watch the #film.

#TheQuietEarth, 1985, is #NowPlaying on #TheCriterionChannel.

Worth watching.

The Quiet Earth - The Criterion Channel

Directed by Geoff Murphy • 1985 • New Zealand Starring Bruno Lawrence, Alison Routledge, Anzac Wallace In this utterly original and provocative take on the “sole survivor” genre, Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence), a mid-level scientist working on a global energy project, wakes up to a nightmare. THE QUIET EARTH (1985) is a greatly underrated movie (full movie on YouTube below). The premise is simple. A scientist (brilliantly played by Bruno Lawrence) wakes up to find that he's seemingly the only man left on Earth. But he's not. And there's some dark quality which unites all those who managed to survive. What makes the film work so well is the strange atmosphere and a subtle investigation about what constitutes living. And the final scene!
