Negotiations on a Global Plastics Treaty continue this week in Ottawa, Canada. The Ocean Cleanup hopes for an ambitious treaty which addresses plastic pollution throughout its whole lifecycle, including legacy plastic already in the marine environment – from rivers, beaches and coastlines all the way to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
“Interceptor 006 is located in the Rio Las Vacas, around 16 km north of Guatemala City. The Rio Las Vacas is a tributary of the Rio Motagua – one of Guatemala’s main waterways and a significant contributor to plastic emissions into the Gulf of Honduras and the Caribbean Sea.
“Waste management challenges mean municipal and sanitary waste from Guatemala City is washed into the Rio Las Vacas during heavy rains, with this waste then flowing into the Rio Motagua and towards the coast.”

The Ocean Cleanup System 03: Harvesting since April 25, 2024

“System 03 is 2.2 km (~1.4 miles) and was deployed for the first time in August 2023. We have been gradually extending and improving to reach this stage, transitioning from System 002 since July 2022. Operating at this length requires its learning process for the crew offshore and onshore. These learnings will be incorporated into our planning for the next steps and future scale-up plans for more systems in the patch. Stay tuned for more updates on our social media and on the website.”
