I re-read ‘All Systems Red’, the first book in the Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells, in preparation for watching the television adaptation. I’m happy to report that I still love the book just as much the second time around (I only read it for the first time last October, so that makes sense), and that - though not entirely how I imagined it - I don’t dislike the television show and feel like a lot of the changes make sense for the change of medium. The casting choice of Noma Dumezweni as Dr Mensah is great, but I’m still getting a feel for everyone else. It threw me a little bit that they ditched both Volescu (this cut kind of made sense to be honest) and Overse (whose removal necessitated some changes in relationship dynamics), but I don’t think that it is necessarily a bad thing. The show also does some story elements differently from the book, in a different order, or appears to omit them entirely. Again, I can understand some of the changes for pacing issues and the need to show things rather than relying on the constant internal monologue.

I’ll definitely be tuning in next week to see how the show progresses.

I wish I was artistically capable enough to make a cool logo for "The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon" that I could then punch needle into a bag.

In my mind it has Back to the Future vibes but maybe that's too retro for the story's timeline.

I gushed about #TheMurderbotDiaries so much that my trainee was very interested. And she's a good reader and reads in English, so I brought the first part to work with me today. Since there is a low in tasks for trainees these days, I allowed her to read it at work. She finished in 3.5 hrs and will start to buy the series now 🤣🥹💜

I was a bit skeptical when I saw the actor they picked for Murderbot, but now I watched the trailer like 4 times and I really can't wait for the tv show release on May 16th!

Wow! They even did The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon 😂

Finally, some art again. Last night I got it into my head to draw a random Murderbot design. Here it is, all scowly.
I made several mistakes when choosing materials. This is on Canson marker paper, lined with Faber Castell PITT artist pens and colored with Copic markers. The canson papers starts pushing pigments apart when you try to layer three or more markers, which is not great. The Faber Castell pens didn't dry properly on this paper so it smudged. Next time it's back to cardstock and me actually letting the lines dry over night. I had to edit out a lot of smudged lines that dirtied up the colors. Oof.

I got it into my head last night to draw a random Murderbot design.
There it is. Scowling. Random sci-fi lines on its face, wild hair, rectangular pupils, me having to tint my own paper because I couldn't find my good brown paper in the middle of the night. Yeah.

This is on marker paper and you'd think, alright, this means this works really good for makers. Unfortunately, layering three or more markers makes the pigments push each other away. Canson, why do you do me like this. Next time I'm using cardstock again. The entire point of using alcohol markers is that they blend into each other. I'm just a wee bit mad about this.
