Good grief, evening #audiobooks need #proofreading! π±
PS. I'm only one chapter into Kaliane Bradleys 2024 debut novel, #TheMinistryOfTime, and I'm already loving it. β€οΈ
PPS. For anyone who's read/listened to it and would like more background into the principal character Graham Gore's ill-fated Franklin expedition in search of the Arctic Northwest Passage, I recommend Erebus: The Story of a Ship by Michael Palin. I loved his narration of the audiobook version. And don't worry, this is not a spoiler, as the expedition and its outcome are revealed in Chapter One! π
Kaliane Bradley's THE MINISTRY OF TIME is like a reverse OUTLANDER: instead of a modern woman going back in time and falling in love with a man from the past, the man from the past is brought up to the modern day. The man is Commander Graham Gore, a member of the doomed Franklin Arctic expedition. Through a secret project using a time door, Gore and four other people are brought forward from their respective times for an unknown purpose by the titular Ministry.
The unnamed (as far as I remember) narrator, a young British-Cambodian woman, is assigned the duty of being Gore's "bridge", his guide to the modern day. The modern day has moved further into climate change, with heat waves and storms battering London. Gore is smart and charming, and she starts to fall in love with him, but how is a relationship between an early Victorian and a modern woman going to go? Having a time machine in play means things can get complicated!
This is a cross between a Le Carre-esque spy story of small rooms and agonizing indecision, and a time-travelling romance. It was an enjoyable, if gloomy, read; modern London is not great, the world overall is in worse shape, and we eventually learn that the future centuries will be even worse still. My only problem is that the very last page is a cryptic ending that I didn't get, and left me unsatisfied.

Praised and hyped but intrigued by the concept, I wade in with some suspicion that this hybrid genre work will promise and promise . . .

Prompt 44 - a book that features a married couple who don't live together - March 25, 2025 - I love a good time travel tale, and this one is no exception. The story is unique, told from the point of view of a "bridge," a person employed by the government to help time travelers adjust to our timeline. It has intrigue, romance, and adventure. I feel like this book is going to stick with me for a long time.
