The leather cover on the shield protects it from the rain, the Romans understood that if the composite shield made with animal glue wood and other natural materials got wet it would delaminate and be weakened. Also, the paint would fade, Rome only accepts UV 30 protection as a minimum. #thelegionary

Not Hitchiking – Walking
After posting the photo and the story on the link above, I studied two more exposures from this meeting on the country road in France in 1964. I then discovered he was sitting om MY rucksack. Norwegian original «Bergans meis» from the late 1950s. More discovery: In the first photo of the man he is WALKING! - Coming on foot from afar on the road, carrying all his baggage. As a recent Foreign Legionnaire, like the romans, he had good training in long marches. Apparently a natural way for him to return home. @thelegionary
🇸🇯 Etter å ha lagt ut foto og historien på linken over studerte jeg to eksponeringer til fra dette møtet på landeveien i Frankrike i 1964. Da oppdeget jeg at det var MIN ryggsekk han satt på, Bergans meis fra sent 1950-tall. Enda en oppdagelse: På det første fotoet jeg tok av mannen kommer han gående! – langt der borte på veien, bærer han på all sin bagasje. Som nylig fremmedlegionær, som de romerske legionærene, hadde han god trening i lange marsjer. Dette var sikkert en grei måte for ham å reise hjem på.
