March 27th, Rotterdam. "The HERDS", behind the scenes...
THE HERDS, a public art and climate performance action featuring creatures made of ecological materials, marched on the streets of Rotterdam symbolizing their stampede from climate disaster.
The 43 members of The Emerging Company joined THE HERDS from Southern Europe to Scandinavia, becoming immersed in world-class performances and hands-on learning led by Ukwanda Puppets and Designs Art Collective and Artistic Director Amir Nizar Zuabi. This transformative experience not only developed their skills but also empowered them - as the next generation of storytellers -to bring urgent global issues to life through the art of puppetry.

The procession started in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and travels through various countries towards the North Pole, symbolizing a serious theme: the consequences of climate change.
They now continue their global tour, arriving in Rotterdam as part of the ICAF (International Community Arts Festival).

Life-sized animal puppets traveled 20,000 kilometers from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Norway’s glaciers to raise awareness about climate change. The project, "The Herds," used recycled materials and grew from 15 to 65 puppets along the way. #ClimateChange #TheHerds #EnvironmentalAwareness #ArtActivism #BreakingNews

I was privileged to get to see #theherds live in Skärholmen yesterday. If you are in Stockholm today or tomorrow, make sure you do. Amazing performance and experience.

A powerful start to the day as I bore witness to a small group of animal puppets and their human puppeteers from #TheHerds as they visited London. Their journey runs from the Congo Basin to the Arctic Circle. Met the creator too and thanked him for his vision. #ThinkBig www.theherds.org

The Herds

The Herds is a public arts initiative with an aim to bring awareness to the the issues of climate change - which often results in the forced migration of animal species. The Herds will travel 12,400 miles and visit 20 cities across four months to “flee climate disaster,” with the group making their way from the Congo Basin through Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, and Norway - finishing in the Arctic Circle in August.

The puppets are made primarily from recycled materials: cardboard for the skin and rubber for the joints.

As it travels, the herd will be joined by new locally created puppets representing local species, such as vervet monkeys in Nigeria, wolves and red deer in Europe, and reindeer in Norway. Sadly, some puppets will also 'die' along the route
