We're checking out some examples of comics shared by users here on the Duck regarding the previous post's scavenger hunt. As a reminder, we are looking for a specific type of panel found among Wally Wood's famous 22 panels: [img]https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/media/users/hpkomic/assets/wallywood22panel.png[/img] Specifically, the challenge is to find or create a panel in your comic archive based on the [i]"frame"[/i] style of panel, as seen here: [img]https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/media/users/hpkomic/assets/pbp_wood_frame.jpg[/img] So, let's see what we have this week, as shared directly by some of the Duck's creators. First off, we have this example from [b][url=https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/dragonsong12/]dragonsong12[/url][/b]: [img]https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/media/users/dragonsong12/comics/Conscripted/web/tVOdwGevPY.png[/img] As we can see, ruins divide the bottom bleed panel, creating a foreground and background. With that said, I feel this panel doesn't quite match the Wood example because, technically, the foreground element is part of the narrative move of the panel. We notice that figures in the foreground are watching our distant figures. In the wood example, there isn't a sense that the foreground matters much besides being a frame. The panel's action works across those two distinct planes here, making the foreground part of the narrative. Regardless, this is still really cool to see and creates a lot of visual interest on the page. Our following example is from [b][url=https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Ironscarf]Ironscarf[/url][/b]: [img]https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/media/users/Ironscarf/assets/EVp23.p2.png[/img] This panel, I think, is very much in the spirit of the Wally Wood example, as the framing isn't necessarily part of the action, as everything is playing out behind the framing element. We are still occupying a voyeuristic view of the scene, but narratively, our POV is unimportant, and nothing plays out on our side of the divide. Our third example is from [b][url=https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/mattwandcow/]mattwandcow[/url][/b]: [img]https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/media/users/mattwandcow/comics/Wishtember/web/yxunPrbDf9.png[/img] Here, we view a scene on the street from another window, but we have the added effect of glass providing a coloration to the scene. This panel works on this page, but if the next update has someone watching from the window, it won't apply retroactively because we are in a character's POV. However, that depends on whether we see someone watching from this position in the next update of the comic. So, this one has yet to play out. Lastly, we have a panel from [b][URL=https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Oxfordinary/]Oxfordinary[/url][/b]: [img]https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/media/users/Oxfordinary/comics/Alpacomics/web/KfUTbFYV1I.png[/img] This one is harder for me to determine. I am leaning toward it violating planar isolation, as implied in the Wally Wood panel because our adorable alpacas are reacting to and commenting on things within the house. As such, implied action is heavier here, as characters acknowledge what is essential to the planar barrier. With that said, I think all the panels in this update add much visual interest and make exciting choices on their respective pages. I am not trying to be nitpicky, but I think there is a definite rule we can apply to this style of panel. We don't need panel purity tests, but it is interesting to see the results. We return to our regularly scheduled program this week, where I find interesting panels and wax philosophical about them. Previously we did a scavenger hunt which was a lot of fun, but we're going to knuckle down and focus on panel analysis for the next couple of articles. So... who likes cats? That's how I will segue into today's selection, [b][i][url=https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Kingdom_of_Cats/]Kingdom of Cats[/url][/i][/b], by [b][url=https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Rachel87/]Rachel87[/url][/b]. We're looking at a specific strip, [b][url=https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Kingdom_of_Cats/5725122/]the first one[/url][/b], actually, which shows the comic is off to a good start. Here is the strip in question: [img]https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/media/users/hpkomic/assets/pbp_koc_boundrybreak.jpg[/img] So obviously, we're going to talk about the boundary break in the comic as that big-ass sandwich spans three panels but occupies the space outside the panels. If you subscribe to the theory that panels are moments in time, this sandwich is technically outside the time boundary. The theory about panels spanning time is something I am cribbing loosely from Scott McCloud, who articulated it best in his book [b][i][url-https://scottmccloud.com/2-print/1-uc/index.html]Understanding Comics[/url][/i][/b]. Still, the gist is that you could look at each panel as a unique moment in a sequence and that, depending on the visuals between panels, more or less time can pass between those panels. So, on the one hand, the central panel showing the cat carrying the mid-section of the sandwich is doing extra work because you can get the sense the sandwich is being carried for some time. Of course, the most obvious gag here is that this is a big-ass sandwich, and the joke is that it breaks the panel boundary by sheer size is the main takeaway. But when you think about the construction of comics and how sequencing plays out, there is quite a lot to it. It's also interesting to see a boundary break like this. Usually, overlapping elements, such as boundary breaks, can be used to give a comic the appearance of more three-dimensional depth. Comics are a largely flat medium, originating on printed pages, so visual depth is entirely simulation. Aside from perspectives and foreshortening, layering is the biggest tool for making a page feel more three-dimensional than it is. Allow me to indulge in an example from my webcomic, [b][i][url=https://www.cosmicdash.com/comic/episode-2-pg-34-2/]Cosmic Dash[/url][/i][/b], for a second: [img]https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/media/users/hpkomic/assets/pbp_cosmicdash_panelbreak.jpg[/img] In that example, I have the character popping off the page through extreme foreshortening and a boundary break across two panels. But in the case of [b][i][url=https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Kingdom_of_Cats/]Kingdom of Cats[/url][/i][/b], the emphasis on the boundary break is less on three-dimensional appearance as the comic is entirely designed on a single plane, and more about serving a simple gag, but it works quite well. The comic doesn't appear to be angling to me more three-dimensional, but rather using the nature of panels to make the sandwich appear larger because of the temporality created by the panels.
