In April 1986 The Danse Society issued Angel, a single that sounded like it had crawled out of a crypt spangled with neon. Vast, martial drums cracked the pavement, synths spiralled skyward like funeral incense, and Steve Rawlings bellowed a liturgy for cities already half-in flame. The song grazed the indie charts, then served as the group’s self-written eulogy: internal schisms tore the Barnsley five-piece apart the following year, leaving Angel as their final wide-release dispatch (at least until the band reformed in 2011).
