Here's a nice summary of the Jane's Walks (& bike rides) happening in this w/e via
#TheCoastHFX. If you live in
#HalifaxNS and want to really experience the inaccessiblility of our urban environment, I'd highly recommend the walk on the blind side with Milena & her guide dog, Hope. I did this walk last year & it was 🔥

This weekend in Halifax, there’s a Jane’s Walk for everyone. Yes, you too.
One of the year’s biggest, most consistently fascinating volunteer-led events returns this weekend—and just in time for the good weather. On Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, nearly 20 Jane’s Walks will take place all over Halifax and Dartmouth as part of a global place-making initiative.
The Coast Halifax"To be honest, if people followed municipal politics like they follow sports, there would be braying for blood. In sports it’s easy to recognize poor performance and poor leadership, because it shows up in the standings. In municipal politics those scoreboards are hidden behind titles like “attachment A” and “appendix C.” Another valuable civics lesson from #TheCoastHFX #NSPoli #ZeroVisionHFX

Everything you need to know about HRM council’s Jan. 9 meeting
At Tuesday’s council meeting, the city’s elected officials learned that one of the city’s departments is slowly but surely suffocating the Halifax’s future. But before that happened, there was a piece of good news: The Halifax Common Master Plan came back to council and got approval.
The Coast Halifax"What this budget pre-season has taught us is that our municipal government is not flexible enough to adapt to the rapid changes required by the ongoing climate emergency and the future of our climate-changed world". Daring to question city hall’s new-car habit
During the HRM’s final budget preseason meeting, on December 12, councillor Trish Purdy caught a lot of stick. Tuesday’s budget meeting was the Capital Updates and Advance Tenders meeting.

Sprawl is still a problem for Halifax, 20 years after it was flagged as an urgent issue
The Community Planning and Economic Development Standing Committee met on Thursday, Nov. 16, and the only thing they did of consequence was vote on a motion allowing construction companies to pour concrete an additional hour and a half until 9:30 pm. This will go to council for final approval.

Nova Scotians are being governed very badly when it comes to climate
In the past few years it seems like tragedy has piled on Nova Scotia, which has only been compounded by recent—likely now normal—climate changed weather. In the fires of Tantallon, the flaws and vulnerabilities of suburban sprawl were on full display:
The Coast Halifax"The main takeaway: Global warming is projected to break the 1.5 C threshold for the first time in 2027. Before that time, we need to fundamentally change our consumption habits and patterns to prevent climate change. Even if that work started today, your city government couldn’t even build a bike lane in time. Write to your councillor, you’re in danger".

The Coast Daily"Perhaps the city could take a holistic look at transportation and create a plan that integrates all modes of mobility.... Can you even imagine how nice it would be to live in a city that had some sort of Integrated Mobility Plan that would solve this problem?"
#MattStickland does it again - I look forward to his evisceration of #HalifaxNS Council every time!

Everything you need to know about HRM council’s May 9 meeting
Councillor Trish Purdy demonstrated some ruthless political chops at Tuesday’s HRM council meeting. Purdy has a habit of asking questions that are already answered in the reports given to council prior to meetings.
The Coast Halifax"“Everyone wants a livable planet. Doesn't everybody want clean air, safe spaces for children to play, spaces that are accessible for people? We can have all of these things, even if we do take space away from cars, because it's been demonstrated over and over again, the cities that support active transportation are safer for everyone, including people who are driving.”

Halifax’s road safety inaction is killing people
“Numbers never lie,” the Mexican-American novelist Luis Alberto Urrea wrote in The Devil’s Highway, “they simply tell different stories depending on the math of the tellers.” When Halifax premiered its Road Safety Dashboard in 2020, two years into a long-term plan to eliminate traffic-related injuries and deaths on the region’s streets, the intent was not only to gather better road data across the HRM, but also for those numbers to hold regional councillors and staff accountable in their shared goal of safer streets.
The Coast Halifax"Free parking is the real tragedy of the commons. In a tangible way, we have given up free communal spaces in exchange for free individual spaces. The pattern of making this trade over and over again is what is killing this planet, and even though our politicians talk a big game, they never put their money where their mouth is".

Confused council passes HRM budget with climate tax and carbon subsidies
Weird meeting of HRM council this week, and not just because councillors had to do three meetings in one. The politically weird bit of Tuesday’s meeting is the fact that councillors are unwilling to commit to the actions that will enable their stated goals.
