@axios An algorithm in the #TheChaosMachine
@npr It's #TheChaosMachine still unleashed.
Reading #TheChaosMachine by #MaxFisher. Eye-opening for a non-techie, makes move to #Mastodon even more interesting!

So now not only has Twitter restored Donald Trump’s account Meta (Facebook) will too. The learning algorithms Facebook used fomented genocide in Myanmar and civil unrest in Sri Lanka and helped Trump get elected the first time. Some of the abuses were dialed back but could easily return. Trump will not be president again, but he may be used as a distraction to help elect DeSantis. Full throated #Fascism is back and must be stopped.

I highly recommend The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher. On why centralized social media companies are existential threats. And Chokepoint Capitalism by Rebecca Giblin and Cory Doctorow. On why Amazon, Apple, LiveNation are monopolies that need to be broken up. There’s a lot more to say about both books. They are the most consequential books I’ve read so far in 2023.

I’m reading The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher. It’s pretty clear Mark Zuckerberg belongs in The Hague for letting Facebook turn decades old ethnic tensions into genocide and ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. And that’s only one of his crimes. He could’ve stopped it. All he had to do was to shutdown Facebook in Myanmar.

@ragesoss @iramjohn Thanks for engaging! Know that I spent the latter part of my for-profit career in marketing tech products. I spent a lot of money on social media ads. Today, I advise a successful start up in the influencer marketing world with an emphasis on authenticity, genuine engagement and safety. What struck me after reading #thechaosmachine was that I spent all of that money with the intention of connecting people with products that might help them but I unintentionally fed a beast that is eroding civility and factual discourse. Just because someone has a provocative post doesn’t mean they deserve the amplification of an algorithm. Thoughts?
@iramjohn
Glad to see you highlight #thechaosmachine What are the big takeaways for you? I have a few candidates:
1. Avoid any algorithm driven sources. Make your own decisions on what you consume.
2. Know the source. Only follow and subscribe to content from the original creator.
3. Focus on information you pay for. If it is driven by an advertising business model, run!
4. Populate streams and feeds with legitimate outlets and journalists.
Thoughts?

Moving here while reading Max Fisher's "The Chaos Machine" was the right mix of push and pull that makes me conscious of "the algorithm" and the harm it does. https://www.littlebrown.com/titles/max-fisher/the-chaos-machine/9780316703321/
