Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: POLITICS IS BROKEN: Upgrading Democracy with a House of the People. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.
Join us online to hear from powerful voices who are working to change how their country is run. From the ground-up with popular, grassroots Assemblies of local people demanding to be heard, to an emerging vision for a new National chamber of Parliament, where people are included in the heart of politics. Hosted by Yaz Ashmawi, the activist responsible for covering the Prime Minister in glitter in the name of citizen-led democracy. He is now a strategist and organiser with Assemble, helping local communities hold Assemblies to create a People’s Charter. Birgitta Jónsdóttir is an Icelandic anarchist, poet, protest organiser and politician. In 2012 she founded the insurgent Pirate Party – at one time the most popular party in Icelandic politics – which stood for civil rights and updated forms of democracy. She played a central role in the effort to empower a street movement to transform politics through the creation of a new constitution, which included citizens using democratic lottery to enshrine powers & freedoms to the people of Iceland. James Robertson is a Director of Sortition Foundation – a leading democracy organisation which has supported countless Citizens’ Assemblies to take place across the UK and Europe. He is part of the 858 Project: a campaign to make the UK Parliament fit for purpose by replacing the House of the Lords with a House of Citizens, where ordinary people are handed the powers to hold politicians to account and set the agenda for government. Learn about all this and more, news on the Politics is Broken day of action on November 2nd, where a shared bloc for system-change at the National Palestine March will lead to an Assembly, Banquet & Afterparty.
