Im Februar 1983 veröffentlichte die australische Post-Punk-Band #TheBirthdayParty ihre EP #TheBadSeed auf 4AD. Das Werk erreichte Platz 3 der UK Independent-Charts. Nach dem Ausstieg von Schlagzeuger Phill Calvert übernahm Mick Harvey zusätzlich die Percussion. Wenige Monate später folgte die "Mutiny!"-EP, bevor sich die Band Ende 1983 auflöste. Cave gründete danach die Bad Seeds – eine Namensreferenz an diese finale EP.
