The Alarm ontstond in 1884 in Chicago als radicale arbeiderskrant. Het blad gaf stem aan anarcho-syndicalisten, pleitte voor directe actie en werd na de Haymarket-affaire het symbool van strijd, repressie en persvrijheid binnen de arbeidersbeweging.
