How many Hitchcock films have I seen? Boy, what a rabbit hole to go into!

I checked his filmography and realise I haven't seen any of his many very early (silent) films.

I love all his UK productions from 1934-39, all wonderful. They are pure art, and the erotic undertones are actual undertones, not the thickly plastered-on pathological obsessions from the later movies.

I've watched "The 39 Steps" (1935) and "The Lady Vanishes" (1938) countless, countless times, with undiminished enjoyment.

The wartime US films can occasionally feel a little derivative; I haven't made the effort to see them all and may well have missed out on some hidden gem.

I've seen most of his post-1946 films, some are less exciting than others, all are watchable. North by Northwest (1959) stands out.

I seem to have missed out on his very last film, Family Plot (1976), I probably was just a couple of years too young to see it on release.

The 39 Steps (1935 film) - Wikipedia

Interestingly, the IMDB discussion about how the The Scotsman does not go between London Paddington and the middle of Scotland via Bath has not been balanced by the observation that on screen Hannay's journey takes 4 days. Xe leaves the murder scene on Wednesday morning, but it is Saturday night by the time that xe talks to the Crofter's Wife.

Compressing and distorting journeys remains a cinematic staple to this day.

I opined that #BBC 2 had the best #movies this year. Whilst the TiVo is recording, I am supplementing with #AlfredHitchcock's #The39Steps recorded a while back.

The timeline is not actually as confused as IMDB makes out; as the whole story actually happens over the span of a week. But the newspapers do report the murder having happened on two different days. Contemporary audiences had no freeze frame, on the gripping hand, & the actual dialogue is self-consistent about the timeline.

This one on Archive.org is a tough one to watch, given its age and tinny sound, but it's wonderful.

The Thirty Nine Steps at Saint Vincent Plaza in Glasgow. They're named after a book by the Glasgow author John Buchan, but is the name appropriate?
