今はまだ冬の気配が色濃く残っています。でも年齢を重ねるにつれて、時間は以前よりも早く流れていくように感じます。皆さんも、そんな感覚はありませんか。

そう思うと、暖かな日差しの中で、また近所の方々と散歩しながら挨拶を交わす季節も、きっとすぐそこです。とても穏やかで親切なご近所さんに恵まれていることを、日々ありがたく感じています。

桜の木々も相まって、名古屋市守山区というこの郊外の街は、本当に心地よい場所です。絵のモチーフを探すのに、遠くへ行く必要はありません。家の前の道端にイーゼルを立てたり、裏庭にそっと置いたりするだけで十分です。毎年、新しい発想やモチーフ、小さな違いに出会えます。

この絵を描いたのは2019年。気づけば、もうすぐ6年が経とうとしています。先ほど、Daft Punkの「Touch (Drumless Edition) (feat. Paul Williams)」をヘッドホンで聴きながら、この作品を眺めていました。音楽が絵の印象を変えたり、逆に絵が音楽の聴こえ方を変えたりする——その関係性は、いつも不思議で魅力的です。静寂の中で絵と向き合う時間も、また違った強さがあります。

Winter still lingers in the air. But as I get older, time seems to move faster than it once did. Do you feel that too?

Thinking about it that way, it won’t be long before we’re greeting our neighbors again during our walks, this time under warm sunlight. My family is lucky to be surrounded by such kind and gentle people, and we're grateful for that every day.

With the cherry trees adding their presence, the ward of Moriyama-ku in Nagoya feels like a truly pleasant suburban place to live. When I look for motifs to paint, I don’t have to go far. Setting up an easel by the roadside in front of the house, or quietly in the garden behind it, is enough. Every year brings new ideas, new motifs, new details.

I painted this piece in 2019. It’s surprising to realize that nearly six years have passed since then. Earlier today, I was looking at the painting while listening to “Touch (Drumless Edition) (feat. Paul Williams)” by Daft Punk on my headphones. I’m always fascinated by how music can change the way an image feels—and how an image can, in turn, change the way music is heard. Even viewing a painting in complete silence can give it a different kind of intensity.
