We used to also use them on paper when a sentence or idea had to be continued on the flip side of the page, or when we wanted a dramatic pause before a reveal. Kind of like a written drum roll.

Is there a way on iPhone to turn off automatic balloons and fireworks animations when texting happy birthday and happy new year? Iβd rather be the one to choose!
EDIT: Itβs Settings -> Accessibility -> Motion -> turn off Auto-Play Message Effects. I just tested it, and message effects from other people can still be played at will.
