Thinks I hate from #GNU and a bit from #Unix/#X11:

- #Emacs Calc (core package) depending on nonfree (not
GPL compatible) Gnuplot for plots. They should rewrite
the output for GNU #Plotutils and enhance the second
to have 3D plot support.

https://spdx.org/licenses/gnuplot.html

Distributing Gnuplot forks as a patch
against the main one -mandatory- makes Gnuplot's
code unshareable with other projects, period.

- #Texinfo (official GNU documentation format)
depending on #Texlive where tons of stuff in the official
release it's nonfree. Again, that should be a core feature
for #texinfo, and not depend on #tex at all.

- #Xedit might look as a crude X11 text editor but it
supports vi command AND it has an embedded Lisp
interpreter (compatible with a bit of CL/core Elisp
code, enough to do Math). It's 2026 and still doesn't
support neither UTF8 nor Unicode fonts. Trying to
enforce them under Xaw3D (LD_PRELOAD) will crash XEdit.
That editor would have lots of support if it supported them.
It's far lighter than Emacs and with the bundled Lisp
you might do wonders.

Back to Groff/Troff.
At least under #Hyperbola GNU (and future #BSD) with #mandoc
and maybe by promoting groff they are pretty much safe
even to typeset formulae into diferent formats, you can
pretty much use Groff for Math paper drafts and then
use TexLive for standard, rigid academic layouts.

@shom I used #freesoftware to slice up and merge PDFs from various textbooks to produce reading packets. (#TeXLive's #pdfjam, also recommend @pdfarranger).

Took the trouble to get them approved by the copyright compliance police in University Libraries. Been distributing them with a clear conscience and a light heart for many years.

I hope I have students who will remember me the way you remember that teacher of yours.

TeX Live has been updated to version 2026 by one of our team members at haikuports @jmairboeck, a big thanks there!

Following up on that I've updated TeXstudio to it's latest release 4.9.3.

You know that you are a nerd, when you spent half an hour to get the page number of the index entry for recursion into the displayed pages of the #recursion entry.

At the ConTeXt intro workshop last Wednesday, participants struggled with ConTeXt on the newly released TeX Live 2026.
Not the usual about wrong paths or unwritable cache directories.

ConTeXt was apparently correctly installed, generating the file database and the format was working, but then it couldn’t find the format file if the "context" or "mtxrun" command wasn’t called with its full path.

TeX Live’s processes were changed before this release and something’s broken.

TeX Live 2026 released | There and back again

Get the Champagne ready, we have released the final images of TeX Live 2026. Nothing spectacularly new in this version, but improvements across that bank, and a new player: `xdvipsk`, an extended dvips with support for more image formats and (with LuaTeX) OpenType and TrueType fonts. Things I was very…

There and back again

The latest update (a few minutes ago) is deemed the #TeXlive 2026 snapshot of #ConTeXt #LMTX.

The announced update has happened.

Beware of changes WRT footnotes!

Another addition is:
\setuplayout[grid=snapping]
different grid snapping model that delegates more to the TeX engine. Some info in beyond-snapping.tex; still experimental. Some mechanisms (like section heads & math) accept a snapping parameter.

Several bug fixes & small enhancements.

Wolfgang updated the interface definition files!
