A rare mineral from outer space could revolutionize solar energy. It’s called tetrataenite, and it’s a super-strong magnet that can withstand high temperatures. Researchers have used it to create a new type of solar cell that can generate more power and last longer. #Tetrataenite #SolarEnergy #SpaceMineral https://www.thecooldown.com/green-tech/tetrataenite-cosmic-magnet-stone-solar/
Scientific breakthrough with mysterious cosmic metal could solve major crisis on Earth: 'There’s been an urgent search'

Cambridge researchers are trying to recreate an outer space magnet on Earth. If successful, the work could give the West renewable tech independence from China.

Originally found in a #meteorite, and now finally obtained in the laboratory. #Tetrataenite is a #material that can help become independent of rare earths materials, on which #China has almost a monopoly.

I'm not seeing enough about #tetrataenite.

I want my space magnets, damn it!

ICYMI - in 2022 a research team including Lindsay Greer @Cambridge_Uni discovered a potential new method for making the #magnets used in wind turbines and electric cars (without using #RareEarths): creating #tetrataenite.

‘Cosmic magnet’ research could reduce reliance on rare earth elements

A new way to make tetrataenite could reduce the need for rare earth elements, which are difficult to mine and almost only found in China.

@riskable My focus is on the #EV space. But temperature matters there too, because #neodymium magnets start to lose field strength in the range of temperatures motors actually experience (~80°C). So you have to use higher amounts of #dysprosium, which means even higher cost & somewhat lower nominal field strengths. So #tetrataenite could be a really good fit, IF the achievable field strengths can approach the theoretical.

Need to watch this space, as I have investments in some rare earth plays.

Hey, any #researchers (#physics, #materials science, etc) doing #research on magnetic materials [#magnetism]? I'd like your take on the prospect of #tetrataenite as an alternative to #neodymium #magnets. My understanding is that the theoretical magnetic energy product is about 80% that of available neodymium magnets, but that raises the question of how much realizable magnetic energy products might approach theoretical.
