AGI - Giornata più positiva per gli azzurri del tennis agli Internazionali d'Italia. Flavio Cobolli, numero 12 del ranking, avanza al terzo turno domando in due set il francese Terence Atmane (n. 51 Atp) e conquistando la seconda vittoria in carriera nel torneo di casa, dopo quella del 2024 contro il tedesco Marterer: 7-6(1) 6-3, in un'ora e 46 minuti di gioco, il punteggio in favore di Cobolli.
L'azzurro si giocherà un posto negli ottavi di finale con l'argentino Thiago Agustin Tirante, uscito indenne dalla sfida con la testa di serie numero 17 Cameron Norrie.
Bellucci sorprende al Foro Italico
Ma la sorpresa più bella si chiama Mattia Bellucci. Il numero 80 Atp, dopo il successo all'esordio su Roman Andres Burruchaga, sconfigge in rimonta Tomas Martin Etcheverry, testa di serie numero 24, con il punteggio di 5-7 6-2 6-3 in due ore e 34 minuti di gioco. Per il tennista di Busto Arsizio si tratta del miglior risultato in carriera a Roma. 

Bellucci si giocherà un posto negli ottavi di finale con il lucky loser Martin Landaluce, che ha eliminato in due set il 37enne Marin Cilic con un doppio 6-4.
In campo Sinner
Sul campo Centrale è di scena Jannik Sinner che sfida l'austriaco Sebastian Ofner, n.82 al mondo. Tra i due è il primo confronto diretto nel circuito maggiore, ma l'azzurro ha vinto in due set nel 2019 la finale del Challenger di Ortisei.

Flavio Cobolli, world number 12, advanced to the third round by dominating the Frenchman Terence Atmane (ATP 51) in two sets and securing his second career victory in a home tournament, after the 2024 one against German Marterer: 7-6(1) 6-3, in one hour and 46 minutes of play, the score in favor of Cobolli.

The Italian will play for a place in the quarterfinals with the Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante, who emerged unscathed from the match against number 17 seed Cameron Norrie.

Bellucci surprises at Foro Italico

But the best surprise is called Mattia Bellucci. The ATP 80, after his success against Roman Andres Burruchaga at the start, defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry, number 24 seed, 5-7 6-2 6-3 in two hours and 34 minutes of play. For the tennis player from Busto Arsizio, this is his best career result in Rome.

Bellucci will play for a place in the quarterfinals with lucky loser Martin Landaluce, who eliminated him in two sets with a double 6-4 against the 37-year-old Marin Cilic.

On the Central Court, Jannik Sinner is in action against Austrian Sebastian Ofner, number 82 in the world. It is their first direct encounter in the main circuit, but the Italian won in two sets in 2019 the final of the Ortisei Challenger.

La campionessa in carica di Roma, Jasmine Paolini, non ce l'ha fatta. La tennista italiana si è arresa a Elise Mertens, in un match dove non è riuscita a sfruttare tre match point nel secondo set, favorendo così la rimonta della belga. "E' una sconfitta dura - ha detto nel post-partita - soprattutto per il punteggio, per come è andata . Ma lei è una grande giocatrice. È solida. Penso che abbia giocato molto bene i punti importanti. Io, a volte, avrei potuto essere un po' più intelligente. Quindi è dura, ma è il tennis e può succedere".
Avanza invece al terzo turno Flavio Cobolli, che in due set ha domato il francese Terence Atmane (n.51 Atp) conquistando così la seconda vittoria in carriera nel torneo di casa dopo quella nel 2024 contro Marterer. Bene anche Musetti, che ha battuto Perricardi con doppio 6-4 strappando il biglietto per l'incontro con l'argentino Cerundolo, e anche Darderi che ha liquidato Hanfmann con doppio 6-4. Alle ore 19:00 di oggi 9 maggio, scende in campo il numero 1 al mondo Jannik Sinner contro l'austriaco Sebastian Ofner.

The reigning Rome champion, Jasmine Paolini, did not succeed. The Italian tennis player surrendered to Elise Mertens, in a match where she failed to capitalize on three match points in the second set, thus allowing the Belgian to mount a comeback. “It’s a tough defeat – she said after the match – especially for the score, for how it went. But she is a great player. She is solid. I think she played the important points very well. I, sometimes, could have been a little more intelligent. So it’s tough, but it’s tennis and it can happen.”
