The #StreetFighterRPG was the first time I encountered the idea that defeat didn't need to be death. That you could fail, and lose, and instead of your problems being OVER-- they got worse and you still had to deal with them.
#TenraBanshoZero is the first time I encountered the idea of getting in-game bonuses for raising the stakes-- you declare that you're willing to die for something, and the game lets you fight harder. It's something I've used in more D&D-like games.
