anyone have opinions on self hosting an ip pbx for experimenting, seems like options are yate (used by eventphone), asterisk [& FreePBX] (old, well regarded but possibly bit crusty?), FreeSwitch [& kazoo], 3CX, idk what else there is

this is all very new to me, never touched telephony b4, so plz forgive ignorance

My account was was originally under Qwest, then CenturyLink, then Quantum Fiber, now Quantum Fiber from AT&T.

My rabbit hole for today is a Youtube channel of someone who took their sweet time and not only recorded different phone announcements across the world but also went through the ITU and ETSI recommendations and actually recreated different telephony signaling sequences from different parts of the world at different times going back to 1955, then did some more tinkering and did the same with some cordless phone ringtones. Just to get a break, they simulated a couple of international calls, putting the right signals and probably TTS-created voicemail greetings at the right places.
