That's got nothing to do with "techies" (apart from the paradox effect that non-techies, supposedly better in communicating, which I don't believe, BTW, cannot help you with techie topics --- LOL).

It will also not be for you as soon as you have had the first client insisting that their not understanding is all your problem despite their unwillingness to do their homework.

I have come to the conclusion that one can only do helpline with a guaranteed response (aka service level) for money (either a lot or because you are desperate and really need it).

For free, as community engagement, it's only possible to help people when the vibes are right: We feel with them or like their approach. Or learn a bit about teaching.

That said (and if you still got your problems 4 months later), you can always ask your mastodon timeline, subscribe to tags like #email, #postfix and build yourself a list of people which are savvy on these topics and might be willing to answer the odd question (if asked nicely / in the right way).

Maybe there are even mailing lists or still the one or the other usenet group. Stackoverflow might also still work for these topics (likely most nearest to the personal helpdesk you desire).

To all #technologists / #techies: This won't be limited to #Android. They WILL insist on the same standard of #security on all #devices. Are you ready to settle for just #Windows, #MacOS and #Chromebook?

These #corporations have splendidly demonstrated that they're primarily #authoritarians and #fascists who wield #technology as their main weapon. Who does that leave as their opponents? You have to inform the rest of the #population. Your #voice matters! Make it count!

#techies Is it possible Facebook is filtering comments on other pages posts to those it thinks I want to see? I have been amazed at the pushback on Republican Representatives and Senators posts about the economy, legislation, the war, and support for #Trump. 99% of the comments are opposed to Republican Congressional actions. The commenting accounts look legitimate. That seems wonderful unless FB is simply not showing me the other side.

Thank you for your help in understanding this stuff!

So the entire #devcommunity loves to be dependent on big tech for making decissions and doing their jobs. So relying on #frameworks and tools made by bigtech is not enough no we love to get to choose from 5 big players to do the job we loved. I don't get that. Thats to be honest just a big trap we are going inside. No one will ever be able to replicate a system that big tech did with #ai on their own. The problem was in the past and nowadays always the compute that has to power those imennse datacenters to give you the answere to most of the times obvious questions like "can you generate the code to compare two dates" or "hey chatgpt can you please center the div for me"

Really #techies i don't get what makes you think that this is a future we want to face where 5 companies decide if you have a successfull product or not.

Okay, #techies, this link came across my eyes this week. Headscale: https://headscale.net/stable/

What would be the advantages of self-hosting something like this, vs. just using Tailscale? (which I haven't tried yet anyway)

Headscale

An open source, self-hosted implementation of the Tailscale control server.

Burger King will put a command line interface on its employees in Quebec.

In 50 years, we went from teaching #techies how to command machines to teaching machines how to command #normies.

>> #BurgerKing employees in #Quebec will soon be monitored by #ArtificialIntelligence that will listen to their conversations & give them orders

>> … The technology, developed by #OpenAI, is already implemented in some 500 restaurants in #US

Les employés de Burger King au Québec travailleront bientôt sous le joug de l'intelligence artificielle.

@mwl I believe you.... Though it's usually motivation / how you frame the work.

Small example: if you wanted to help #Mastodon, like talking in #jitsi, wanted to sell #books personally, wanted to merge #selfhosted projects and people slowly by surely - then it's just a flick of a switch to find a fun way. A #Podcast etc.

I'm sure you're helping.

Solving the personal communication social growth is probably not for you or most #techies I've known.

Human sides nobody really pays, it's #true.

🚀 OMG, someone is trying to convince people that #Nushell will revolutionize their #terminal lives! 🙄 Expecting #techies to ditch their beloved #bash or #zsh for a "better" shell is like expecting cats to stop ignoring you—good luck with that! 🐱🐚

🎉 Oh joy, a riveting tale of #IRC ping timeouts escalating into a #courtroom drama! 😱 Let's all take bets on how many #millennial #techies forced themselves to feign interest in this saga—spoiler alert: none. 🙈🔍

mjg59 | How did IRC ping timeouts end up in a lawsuit?

To all the #techies and #nerds and #Linux folk who advised when I appealed for help with my Debian/Nextcloud server, I *think* I've fixed it.Poking around in lshw and actually taking the lid off the thing I found there was only 4GB of RAM and Swap was running at 100% (presumably fending off unauthorised login attempts by the thousand). It now has 16GB and has run for 24 hours without a glitch.
