Contrary to popular belief, KPIs for engineering teams exist to identify the heart rate of your organization, not to penalize individuals or hunt for scapegoats.
Using metrics to blame people is like shooting someone who has a cold instead of treating them. It's fundamentally broken leadership.
Yet this behavior is extremely prevalent because we keep promoting people into positions of authority they have no business holding. They don't understand team dynamics, engineering, or even people. They just know how to read a dashboard and point fingers.
