Why I love NixOS

Why I love NixOS is really about the Nix package manager, reproducibility, and sane system management in the LLM coding era.

🤔 Ah, the classic tale of a tech enthusiast playing "will-it-blend?" with TPUs and Flash Attention! 🤪 Our hero Archer FAFO (Finds A Free Option) decides to port algorithms like he's playing a game of Tetris—except it's on a free-tier #TPU in #Colab, which is basically like using a Ferrari to deliver pizza for free. 🍕🚗

Forcing Flash Attention onto a TPU and Learning the Hard Way · Archer Zhang

This is the fifth post in a series on LLM internals. Part 1 covered attention, Part 2 covered generation, Part 3 covered the Flash Attention algorithm, Part ...

Ah yes, the riveting tale of a tech enthusiast desperately trying to coax a few more colors out of a 6-color e-ink display. 🎨 Because, clearly, that's the pressing issue of our time. 🌈 Let's all pretend adding dithering magic to a glorified calculator screen is the pinnacle of human achievement. 🤣

Beyond 6 Colors: Exploring Dithering on Spectra 6-color E-Ink Displays - myembeddedstuff.com

I have tested the XIAO ePaper DIY Kit (ESP32-S3) – EE04 from Seeed Studio in depth. While its 6-color Spectra 6 display is impressive out of the box, I wanted to see if software could overcome hardware limitations. In this post, I’ll share how I’ve pushed this hardware to its limits by using dithering techniques […]

I'm a laptop weirdo and that's why I like my new Framework 13

It turns out I've always done weird things to my laptops.

Ah yes, because who doesn't want to spend their weekend parsing ELF headers and translating memory access while pretending they understand #Armv7 CPU emulation? 🤓 By the end of this 8,336-word epic, you'll be the life of the party with your newfound ability to forward syscalls and handle exception exits. 🎉 #Goals

@Prozak You're absolutely right—running 20B+ models locally can be quite costly. From a purely economic standpoint, your setup with LiteLLM + Ollama + cloud for heavy lifting makes the most sense for most people.

However, I still find myself drawn to the idea of experimenting with a local setup, even if it's not the most cost-effective choice. There's a certain appeal to tinkering with hardware and having full control over the system. It's not just about efficiency; it's about learning, autonomy, and the satisfaction of building something with your own hands. It's akin to building a custom PC just for the enjoyment of the process—sometimes, the journey itself is the reward!

Have you ever felt the urge to go fully local, even if just for the experience? Or are you firmly in the "hybrid is the best approach" camp?

This is my new Mastodon server. Yeah, another moment, another time, I reset my VPS and then reinstalled this instance again. I enjoyed discovering how to configure my VPS very perfectly without flaws, without results that are due to low-quality decisions, mistakes, and unorganized or unplanned choices.

But, my presence in the Fediverse isn't new. It has been traced back to around the 2020s (I can't remember the exact date) when, at that time, Vivaldi Browser offered me the opportunity to create a new browser sync personal account, and I also started using their Mastodon instance called "Vivaldi Social."

In Malaysia, there were many news mentions of the Fediverse and Mastodon because, at that time, Elon Musk was buying a platform called Twitter before he rebranded it as X, which caused people online to be upset that their favorite platform could be easily bought by a so-called billionaire.
