Why I'm Not Paying My Federal Taxes This Year

I would rather take the risk than knowingly fund our government's despicable actions.

Important to stress: if, at some point after several years of #taxResistance the IRS _does_ decide to actively pursue you for the money, *you will owe several times as much as your original tax debt.*
You may be able to negotiate away some of it, but maybe not.
We can speculate that the IRS *probably* won't come after you for the money, but it's not certain.
Tax resistance may still be a reasonable thing to do, especially given our current government, but you do need to be aware of the risk.
UPDATE: I've confirmed that the threshold of $25k over ten years below which the #IRS probably won't come after your money *** includes any interest and penalties that have accrued ***, so the math is a lot more complicated than just paying $2,500 less than you owe each year.
The interest rate the IRS charges on back taxes is variable, so if you want to get as close as possible to that $25k limit spread out over the ten years, you have to adjust how much you don't pay each year.

This is not financial or legal or tax advice, but for those who are curious, here is some of what I think I've learned in researching U.S. federal #taxResistance, i.e., refusing to pay some or all of your federal income taxes because what the government is doing is immoral and you don't want to support it.
https://nwtrcc.org/ is a good starting point, though I didn't find all the below information there (it may be there, but I couldn't find it). (1/11)

If you prefer the audio/visual approach, here is a video of a talk about tax resistance tactics that I gave to a UK tax resistance group a few years back.

Video of My XR Talk on Tax Resistance Tactics • TPL

Here is the video of my talk about how tax resistance campaigns can improve their chances for success by choosing tactics well. I gave the talk at the launch of Extinction Rebellion’s “Money Rebellion” campaign, to about 200 engaged viewers, with a Q&A afterwards.

My book “99 Tactics of Successful Tax Resistance Campaigns” is now available as a free, on-line e-book.

I updated it with some examples from campaigns that erupted since its original publication.

I also changed the title to the snappier “Tax Strike Tactics”.

We can no longer reliably extrapolate from long-standing precedent about how the government operates, or how it responds to tax resisters, to anticipate the near future.

While past tax policy changes have been slow, gradual, and predictable, near-future changes are likely to be abrupt, arbitrary, and unstable.

This presents American tax resisters with new challenges but also new opportunities.

Today I am starting the conversation with my wife about tax resistance. I am not sure we can in good conscience keep giving the U.S. federal government our money.
(This has to be a joint decision since we file jointly and therefore any risk we take on by not paying is shared equally by both of us.)
