Catch of the Day: The Forbidden Apple! 🍏🪟

Hey Retro Fans!
Hold on to your CRT monitors, because our FrogFind radar has caught something today that feels like a relic from a parallel universe. Among all the Nintendos and Linux machines, this legendary identifier appeared:

Internet Explorer 5.17 on Mac (PowerPC)!

For everyone rubbing their eyes right now: Yes, Internet Explorer existed for the Mac, and it was a big deal! Following the historic "peace treaty" between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in 1997, Internet Explorer became the official default browser on all Apple computers for five years.

The craziest part? Mac IE was technically vastly superior to its Windows counterpart at the time! Microsoft built a completely bespoke rendering engine for Apple called Tasman, which was one of the very first to properly support CSS. Version 5.1.7 (released in the summer of 2003) was the absolute final update ever pushed for classic Mac OS 8 and 9 before Apple entirely shifted focus to their own browser, Safari.

The fact that today, over 20 years later, someone boots up an old PowerPC Mac (perhaps a colorful iMac G3?) and browses FrogFind with the Mac-exclusive Internet Explorer is a glorious time machine to an era when Microsoft and Apple surfed hand in hand.

Cheers to the Tasman engine!

@The_Sun @jdmcg this is one of those feeling a bit envious of the folks across the #Tasman moments. I wish there were more #PV #Solar in #NZ. We have #SolarHotwater, so that’s a start.

Thins are looking rough in most of the Nelson / Tasman area at the top of NZ's South Island.

There are evacuations in Lower Moutere, Takaka is likely to flood, Kaiteriteri and Riwaka residents are under a conserve water notice and there are multiple power outages.

This story has more detail.

Note: It's easier to read the RNZ story on the ODT because they don't use the annoying live feed format.

I’m looking from a (vast) distance at the disaster befalling my home area. I hope my friends are ok. #tasman #nelsontasman

Excited for the new Kia Tasman! They really seemed to go for the functional pick-up vibe. I particularly liked the door handle detail.

How to get away from Cape Foulwind
With a name like Cape Foulwind, you may understand why you want to get away. And how far you must go.
Here the Europeans, the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, anchored in Aotearoa (and later naming it New Zealand), for the first time in 1642. The weather was probably good, and he called the outcrop Cliff Rock.
Then the English Captain James Cook found this place in 1770 under probably worse conditions. He named it Cape Foulwind. Since the English won the competition of ruling Aotearoa, the name stuck.

Signs, and what to do
This signpost is close to the fur seal colony in Tauranga Bay, on a windy, salty and fresh spot to get a good outlook of the area. On this track going south from Cape Foulwind Lighthouse there are stiff cliffs down to pebble beaches and the Tasman Sea, and low rolling hills towards the mountains in east.
This area is a nice spot to stop, relax and enjoy the outlook and beach, especially if you are a surfer. Or hike along the trails and exhibit some coastal flora and fauna of the West Coast Region in South Island. And some fresh, varying weather conditions.
Included an old, secluded track-and-bowl-system near the lighthouse.
The seal colony is well protected, but easy observable from a safe distance from the walking track. The closest town is Westport, and they have all necessary amenities from lodging to food, drinks and hiking equipment.
