The real deal: How William McIlvanney transformed Scottish fiction

“If there is a direct line from the so-called ‘Kailyard’ writers of the late 19th century […] to the playful savagery of Irvine Welsh and the still rising body-count of ‘tartan noir’, then at its midpoint stands William McIlvanney.”

An in-depth look at one of Scotland's greatest and most enigmatic writers

BBC

I finished reading yesterday Liam Mclivanney's 'tartan noir' crime/thriller novel, The Good Father. I used to follow Mclivanney on Twitter as he is Stuart Chair in Scottish studies at the University of Otago in Ōtepoti. And a good follow he was too. His latest novel, set in Scotland, is about a seven-year-old boy who goes missing. It is extremely well-written and a classic of its genre. I can't give too much away about the plot so as not to give any 'spoilers', but there are many unexpected twists and turns. It is a great story about what parents will do to protect and look after their children, hence the title. And it also shows just how true the saying, 'hurt people hurt people.' is.

As I get older though, I have less and less desire to read about the hurt and pain in the world, and I nearly gave up about halfway. I am glad I persisted because the writing is so good and the story keeps you intrigued, but I may have had enough of reading about the darker side of what people are capable of. Recommended for aficionados of tartan noir.

Yesterday bought Laidlaw by William McIlvanney from my local bookshop, Backstory in Balham. https://backstory.london/ It cost £9.99. On Amazon it's £8.99. Or you can read it for free on Kindle Unlimited. McIlvanney is from Kilmarnock in Scotland where I grew up. I can well imagine his scorn for Amazon and Kindle. An extra £ well, spent, I feel.

Hey @enriquericos have you seen Dept. Q on #Netflix? they called it #TartanNoir (takes place in #Scotland ..lol) many familiar elements: talented but rather off the rails detective with an odd team, stuck in the basement to solve cold cases.... *but* very well done, with some unexpected elements as well. There are shows that I *like* and there are shows that I stay up later than I intended to continue watching- this is one of those..lol #tv #entertainment
