“Non riesco a dormire, Staf. È successo troppo oggi. Ma i fiori sono in arrivo con Jef. Noi partiamo tra poco per le vacanze“. Questo il testo di un messaggio inviato da Wout Van Aert alle 4:15 del mattino, dopo la straordinaria vittoria alla Parigi-Roubaix di domenica scorsa, in volata, contro Tadej Pogacar. Il destinatario è Staf Goolaerts, padre di Michael Goolaerts, ciclista morto nel 2018 proprio alla Parigi-Roubaix per un infarto. Van Aert – alzando il dito al cielo al traguardo – ha dedicato a lui lo straordinario successo nella Classica francese di domenica 12 aprile.
“La Parigi-Roubaix mi ha regalato momenti duri, ma in giorni come oggi è la corsa più bella che esista. Questa vittoria significa tutto per me, era un obiettivo dal 2018. La dedico a Michael Goolaerts che non c’è più e alla sua famiglia, il mio dito al cielo era per lui, ma anche per tutti i miei amici”, aveva dichiarato dopo il trionfo. Dopo una corsa folle, stupenda e ricca di colpi di scena, che ha regalato emozioni indimenticabili, Wout Van Aert si è preso la gloria battendo in volata Tadej Pogacar al termine di un duello che rimarrà nella leggenda. Subito il suo pensiero è andato all’amico Goolaerts, con quel dito al cielo che aveva già emozionato tanti.
Oggi un altro gesto di grande affetto: Van Aert ha deciso di regalare il bouquet della corsa proprio alla famiglia dell’amico scomparso nel 2018. Gliel’aveva promesso in quel messaggio inviato alle 4:15 del mattino e l’ha fatto: “Wout ha mantenuto la promessa con il bouquet”, ha dichiarato Marianne, mamma di Michael Goolaerts. “Vedo questo come una vittoria per il nostro Michael. Non che sia sempre in contatto con noi. Ma Michael è nel suo cuore. Tutti quelli della squadra di allora hanno ancora un posto speciale per lui”. Il padre Staf invece sorride ricordando il messaggio notturno: “Ieri sera gli avevo scritto io, ma non potevo certo pretendere che rispondesse subito. Mi sono svegliato e l’ho visto”.

The recipient was Staf Goolaerts, father of Michael Goolaerts, cyclist who died in 2018, also at the Paris-Roubaix, from a heart attack. Van Aert – raising his finger to the sky at the finish – dedicated the extraordinary success in the French Classic on April 12th to him.
“The Paris-Roubaix gave me hard moments, but on days like today, it’s the most beautiful race that exists. This victory means everything to me, it was a goal since 2018. I dedicate it to Michael Goolaerts who is no longer with us and to his family, my finger to the sky was for him, but also for all my friends,” he had stated after the triumph. After a wild, wonderful and eventful race, that gave unforgettable emotions, Wout Van Aert seized the glory by beating Tadej Pogacar in a sprint at the end of a duel that will remain in legend. Immediately, his thought went to his friend Goolaerts, with that finger to the sky that had already moved many.
Today another gesture of great affection: Van Aert decided to give the bouquet of the race to the family of the deceased friend in 2018. He had promised it in that message sent at 4:15 am, and he kept his word: “Wout kept his promise with the bouquet,” said Marianne, Michael Goolaerts’s mother. “I see this as a victory for our Michael. He is not always in touch with us. But Michael is in his heart. All those from the team back then still have a special place for him.” The father Staf instead smiles remembering the night message: “I wrote it to him last night, but I couldn’t really expect him to reply immediately. I woke up and saw it.”

Anversa, 5 apr. - (Adnkronos) - Tadej Pogacar trionfa per la terza volta in carriera nel Giro delle Fiandre oggi 6 aprile 2026, conquistando la seconda Classica monumento della stagione con partenza da Anversa e arrivo a Oudenaarde dopo 271 km. Lo sloveno della Uae team Emirates si impone in solitaria davanti all'olandese Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech), che si stacca sull'ultimo passaggio sull'Oude Kwaremont a circa 20 km dal traguardo. A completare il podio il belga Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora Hasgrohe). Pogacar realizza anche la doppietta Sanremo-Fiandre nella stessa stagione, un'impresa riuscita solo a Eddy Merckx nel 1969 e nel 1975.
"Ho ancora più motivazioni ora per andare alla Roubaix, mi godrò le pietre", dice il fuoriclasse puntando alla Parigi-Roubaix di domenica prossima, unica classica monumento che non ha mai vinto. "È stato una gara pazza, molto dura -spiega Pogacar-. Quando si è formato il gruppo davanti sono stato contento che tutti abbiano collaborato, è stato un bene per me. Non volevo che Remco Evenepoel rientrasse, so quanto è forte e sul finale avrebbe potuto fare qualcosa. Terza vittoria quest'anno? Non corro tanto, quando corro lo faccio per vincere. Oggi è andato tutto alla perfezione".

The Slovenian from Uae Team Emirates takes the solo victory ahead of the Dutch Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech), who breaks away on the final pass over the Oude Kwaremont approximately 20 km from the finish line. Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe) completes the podium. Pogačar also achieves the double Sanremo-Flanders in the same season, an achievement accomplished only by Eddy Merckx in 1969 and 1975.

“I have even more motivation now to go to Roubaix, I’ll enjoy the cobblestones,” says the champion pointing to the Paris-Roubaix next Sunday, the only Monument Classic that he has never won. “It was a crazy race, very hard – explains Pogačar. – I was happy that everyone collaborated when the leading group formed, it was a good thing for me. I didn’t want Remco Evenepoel to come back in, I know how strong he is and he could have done something in the final. Third victory this year? I don't race that much, when I race I do it to win. Everything went perfectly today.”
