Multiple fast moving wildfires in Oklahoma and Texas.

NOAA has issued a #FireWarning for the shaded areas. Each area is at danger from a fire. For details, open the map, click a shaded area and follow the link.

I have been making #Wildfire #GIS maps for at least 10 years and this is the first time I have seen NOAA issue a “fire warning”.

Various wildfires are burning in Texas and Oklahoma.
This area has both a #RedFlagWarning and #HighWindWarning.
Blowing dust is also an issue.
I-40 is reported to be closed east of Amarillo due to #Wildfire and accidents.

Dark symbols on the map are satellite heat detections within the prior 6 hours. This data is not real time and locations are only approximate. Typically there are 8 satellite passes per 24 hours. I think the next update will be this evening.

Some newer fires, like the one along I-40 in the Texas panhandle, have not yet been detected by the satellites.

For any #louisville area peeps trying to visualize just how much area 850,000 acres (1328 sq mi) of wildfire covers:

Think of all of Louisville/Jefferson County (398sq mi). Add Spencer (192) & Oldham (196) counties. Then tack on Floyd (149) and Clark (376) counties across the river in Indiana while you're at it.

That's still about 17 square miles shy of the size of the #txfire.

#Wildfire #smoke from Texas was transported all the way to #Toronto in the southwesterly flow ahead of the cold front sweeping across North America.

Erm, this seems like an astoundingly, fantistically unbelievable way to shed one's mortal coil that one should think would remain fully hypothetical, yet we're 3/4th down this list atm … 😱

1. Work in a nuclear facility
2. Be essential personnel
3. Remain in nuclear facility after mandatory wildfire evacuation for non-essential personnel
4. Die* in a non-nuclear firestorm from said wildfire

*hypothetical at this time (and hopefully remains so! 😬)

Here is the latest satellite hotspot data for the #SmokehouseCreekFire in the Texas Panhandle.

If you open the map and zoom in you will see a uniform pattern in some of the hotspot data. Sometimes (not always) that kind of data indicates the satellite sensors were detecting smoke/embers in the air and not actual fire on the ground. However, never gamble with your life by ignoring an order to evacuate.

The screenshot with weather data is from Pampa TX. Wind out of the north gusting to 38mph.
