Early Apple tech bloggers are shocked to find their name and work have been AI-zombified

TUAW, “The Unofficial Apple Weblog,” was shut down by AOL in 2015, but it has resurfaced with large archives of seemingly plagiarized content under the bylines of former writers.

https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/10/24195858/tuaw-unofficial-apple-tech-blog-ai-web-orange-khan An old Apple blog and the blog’s former authors have become the latest victims of #AI -written sludge. #tuaw (“The Unofficial Apple Weblog”) shut down by AOL in 2015, but this past year, a new owner scooped up the domain and began posting articles under the bylines of former writers who haven’t worked there for over a decade. And that new owner, which also appears to run other AI sludge websites …

Headline: Hocked TUAW

Subtitle: #TUAW, a site that was shut down 10 years ago, was sold to a private equity firm, then to a company in Hong Kong, and has now stolen its old workers' identities and is running their old work through #AI summarizers.

Jason Koebler: Hocked #TUAW

"This month, “Christina Warren” started blogging again for The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW), a legendary and long-dead Apple-centric tech news blog that she worked at more than a decade ago. Warren was for years a well-known and very good tech journalist, before she went on to work for Microsoft and GitHub. The real Christina Warren hasn’t been writing these new posts on the zombie TUAW, however. The site’s new owners have stolen her identity, replaced her photo with an AI-generated one, and have been publishing what appear to be AI-generated articles under her byline."

TUAW makes a sad return as an AI-powered stolen content farm - 9to5Mac

The Unofficial Apple Weblog, more commonly referred to as TUAW, has made a return from the dead, almost a decade...

9to5Mac
"[TUAW], which ceased operations in 2015, began publishing “new” articles… but those posts bear the bylines of writers who last worked for #TUAW more than a decade ago. The site also has an author page featuring the names of former writers along with photos that appear to be AI-generated." Jesus, that's bad! 😬 https://www.engadget.com/apple-blog-tuaw-returns-as-an-ai-content-farm-225326136.html
Apple blog TUAW returns as an AI content farm

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) has come back online nearly a decade after shutting down ... as an apparent AI-generated content farm.

Engadget

I used to be a huge fan of #TUAW dot com. ("The Unofficial Apple Weblog")
AOL bought it, kept it around for a wee bit, gutted it, then forwarded the url to the Apple feed of Engadget (lol)

Then they let the stinking domain expire and be snapped up by undesirables.

That's just the final insult to injury.

For those that are curious, some of the original bloggers from TUAW are now at https://appleworld.today — but I confess to not hardly ever reading it.

There's just not much Apple news that excites me anymore.
(Oh look, Apple found a new way to extract money from people in the most petty way possible. Wow. So hubris. Such soulless.)
