#Halloween is coming fast, and I've got so much left to do! Gotta hustle. This fall went from being predictable with some free time to being jam-packed and stressful, but I am committed to getting this done.
After a lovely Thanksgiving long weekend, I abruptly realized that it's October 13. September evaporated in a haze of illness and hands-on parenting, and suddenly I went from being ahead of the curve to being significantly behind on my #TRONtober project. Spent some time tonight making final adjustments to the pattern based on my last fitting with the littlest. Still a couple of points I'm a little unsure about, but they'll be easy enough to adjust on the foam. I printed, assembled, and cut out the pattern one last time, and traced it onto 3mm EVA foam. I'll cut the foam when I'm a little less tired. At least I'm moving this project forward incrementally again. A little bit, every night. Gotta get it done for the littlest to wear on Halloween!
#WritersCoffeeClub for September 30: Were you able to accomplish all your goals this month?
I think so? I didn't have many writing goals this month, beyond ideating and trying some new workflows. Back to school and work after August's holiday absolutely impacted my creative time, family health was a going concern, and most of my creative time was devoted to the #TRONtober project.
I wanted to spend more time getting the latest #PersephonesChampion draft ready for a fresh round of beta than I did, but the headspace wasn't right for it. Also the whole family was sick on a rotating basis, which wasn't fun, and burned significant time I wanted to dedicate to creative work.
I did successfully try out some ways to capitalize on my commute by narrating to my Notes app and using the transcription feature to get a quick and dirty text that I could work from. This is going to make drafting creative nonfiction/personal essays and developing my scripted podcast a lot easier. Otherwise, it's helped me train the muscle of speaking ideas out loud, which I am a huge proponent of. I can feel dialogue tightening as I use my actual voice to try things out. I'm a little less grumpy about my commute now.
That said, I'm behind on where I wanted to be with posting my creative nonfiction, my video production, and my streams. So I'm going to try and crunch a bit on the kiddo's Halloween costume early in the month, and try to devote more time to writing as Oct goes on.
#WritersCoffeeClub for September 25: How many works do you have in progress at a time?
To that I ask: writing projects specifically or projects in general? Either way, the answer is "too many."
Currently, I have:
- final draft of #PersephonesChampion, my MG mythological fantasy adventure, before a fresh round of beta reads
- Persephone 2 in outline/research
- JOE, a deeply Canadian adult historical drama, in development
- three pieces of pretty good creative nonfiction in draft form
- a Star Trek audio drama that I cannot get out of my head and now that the Khan series is airing. I might need to just draft the first episode already
- three or four sci-fi short stories in various phases of drafting
Other things ongoing:
- two podcast episodes scripted and ready to record (and I just had my new microphone delivered!)
- one video scripted and recorded and in need of edits (or maybe re-recording, I haven't quite decided)
- ongoing work on the #TRONtober project
This little illuminated square may not look like much, but it is in fact a HUGE unlock. I wasn't able to find any clear info about the AliExpress EL tape and panels I ordered, so I wasn't quite sure how to approach cutting and soldering the bits I bought for my littlest's TRON Halloween costume. Trial and error to the rescue!

I need to find the guy who wrote octoprint_deploy and all of the contributors and give them all a big ol' kiss. After boxing with Octoprint on Windows for years, it took like 20 minutes for me, a total Linux noob, to get a stable and properly-configured Octoprint instance up and running on Ubuntu. Had to redo the camera setup via terminal, but even that was super easy. Just delightful. What a powerful unlock for my printing. I missed this.
Now printing what I hope is the final prototype of the TRON identity disc's battery and control board interface. Debating the wisdom of swapping to a .2mm nozzle (instead of just a new .4mm one) to print the final version so that the quality straight off the printer is higher and I don't need to do quite as much finishing.
