Onderzoekers onder leiding van het Wageningse bedrijf KeyGene hebben een bananenplant ontwikkeld die resistent is tegen zowel Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4) als Black Sigatoka, twee van de meest verwoestende ziektes voor bananen. Hoogleraar Fytopathologie Gert Kema van Wageningen University & Research was betrokken als adviseur. Hij ziet de ontwikkeling van de nieuwe hybride, genaamd Yelloway One, als een doorbraak in de bananenteelt: “We wisten wel dat we met conventionele veredeling planten kunnen ontwikkelen die resistent zijn tegen deze ziektes. Nu hebben we het laten zien, en bovenal dat we het veel sneller kunnen dan anderen door gebruik te maken van de laatste genetische tools. Dit is van groot belang voor de toekomst van de bananenteelt.”
