Since today marks the anniversary of Tina Turner’s passing on 24 May 2023, it made sense to spin this particular record. I remember the cover artwork catching my eye straight away at the time, and I kept wondering what this album was actually meant to be because it looked like some unofficial release or a bootleg. Turns out it is official after all, just not connected to her estate. Once I had a closer look, though, it all clicked into place. 'The Many Faces Of Tina Turner' is basically a compilation featuring artists Tina Turner covered herself, alongside artists covering some of Tina’s biggest solo hits. On top of that, there is also a whole side dedicated to material from the Ike And Tina Turner era too. Considering the album's title, it suddenly makes perfect sense. It is meant as a celebration of Tina Turner’s long career. Now, a few of the tracks do veer into karaoke territory a bit, though they are still decent enough for what they are in my opinion, but then every now and again you stumble across a proper hidden gem. For instance, Jane Child’s groovy, funky, R&B-infused take on "We Don't Need Another Hero (Beyond Thunderdome)" was a cracking surprise and easily one of the standout moments for me. That said, there is one proper oddball on the tracklist: Heaven 17 covering Elton John’s "Rocket Man". I know Tina and Elton worked together at one point, and Tina even covered at least one Elton John song back in the late ’70s, but honestly, I still cannot really work out the connection here or why that particular cover ended up on this compilation in the first place. Overall, though, the album is actually pretty solid for this sort of compilation, and probably one of the better entries in that whole 'The Many Faces Of...' series. Still, the real winner here might just be the artwork because that cover looks absolutely fantastic!
