System Cleaner BleachBit Gets ‘Major Update’

Open source system cleaning app BleachBit has issued its first major update in over a year, bringing improved cleaning capabilities, security fixes, and myriad changes with it. For the benefit of those with dusty memories, BleachBit is a free, open source system cleaner for Windows and Linux, written in Python and GTK 3. Similar to other apps of its kind, BleachBit helps free up disk space by cleaning out caches, cookies, and other transient cruft. It can also delete files securely, wipe unallocated disk space, and squeeze Firefox’s SQLite database to improve performance. BleachBit 5.0 expands the feature set to

Mission Center 1.0 Adds New Features

Linux system monitoring app Mission Center has put out its first update in 6 months – and it’s a big one! Mission Center 1.0 adds new hardware tracking, UI tweaks, and refactors its backend to provide palapble performance improvements, boost the app’s responsiveness and minimise ‘time deviations between refresh cycles’. The latter may sound a tad dry on the ‘excitement’ scale but, arguably, it’s a big thing: a real-time monitoring app is used for, well, real-time monitoring and those tweaks ensure hardware and system process info shown is more precise. For a closer lookout the “visible” changes in this release,

Ignition is a Modern Startup Applications Utility for Linux

I won’t lie: it’s easy to add or remove startup apps, commands, and scripts in Ubuntu. Just open the Startup Applications tool, click ‘Add’, and away you go. But while Ubuntu’s utility is adequate, it’s not as user-friendly as similar tools available elsewhere. Sure, Startup Applications is equipped with the critical customisation fields a user will need to curate a set of software/services to start at login — SSH agent, VPN app, password manager, backup script, resolution tweaks, and so on — but it’s rather rote. Take the way you add an app to start at login: Ubuntu’s Startup Applications

Refine (Advanced GNOME Settings Apps) Adds More Options

A clutch of new customisation and configuration options were added to Refine, a GTK4/libadwaita app in the vein of GNOME Tweaks (but better), over the weekend. Refine is compelling due to its goal of offering the “convenience to add or remove options without touching a single line of source code” — though for a GUI option to exist it must be hooking into a variable within GNOME, i.e., it can’t magic up a toggle to make it rain glitter! A brief bit of turbulence ensnared those attempting to run the tool on Ubuntu after I covered it in early January

Mission Center (Linux System Monitor) Now Reports Fan Info

A major new release of Mission Center, a modern system monitor app for Linux desktops, has been released. Fans of this Rust-based GTK4/libadwaita system monitoring tool (which to address the recurring elephant in the room does have a user interface inspired by—but I’d argue superior to—the Windows system monitor app) will find a lot to like in the latest update. I’m not going to recap all of this tool’s existing features in this post (I’ve covered this app a few times in the past) and instead focus on what’s changed in the latest build, released at the weekend. Fastfetch is the Perfect Neofetch Replacement

When development on system info tool Neofetch was discontinued1 earlier this year a slew of forks, alternatives, and upstart projects sprung up to fill the void. Yet the Neofetch alternative that’s gained the most traction —anecdotally, at least; I’ve not be creeping around Linux conferences to verify first-hand—is FastFetch (or Fastfetch; not sure on the capitalisation). Fastfetch is similar to Neofetch in that it ‘pretty prints’ information about your OS, pertinent underlying technologies, and system’s hardware specs in a terminal window. But it’s a lot more capable, faster, more featured, supports Wayland (which Neofetch technically didn’t), and (perhaps most importantly)
