System/360 was quite an engineering feat, with an architecture developed first which supported different implementations, including using microcode or not being part of the implementation details.

From the Wikipedia entry on the generic System/360 [1]:

«System/360's chief architect was Gene Amdahl and the project was managed by Fred Brooks, responsible to Chairman Thomas J. Watson Jr.»

Gene Amdahl [2] formulated the eponymous scaling law [3], while Fred Brooks [4] was the author of “The Mythical Man Month” [5], and Thomas J. Watson Jr. [6] was IBM’s second president, who managed the mainframe era of IBM. Watson, the expert system supercomputer that beat Jeopardy! in 2011 [7] was named after his father, IBM’s original founder.

Here's a small collection of 1960's computers appearing in the 70s and 80s. "Frankie and Johnnie... Were Lovers"has some nice shots of a IBM System/360 model 30. Brief library shots of an RCA Spectra 70 appear in "The Bionic Woman" in the episode "Jaime's Shield". Finally "The Cannonball Run" offers us shots of a panel from a GE 635.

Here's a small collection of big iron. "Charly" has a couple of IBM machines: a 7094 and a System/360. There's a really hard to spot ICT 1301 panel in the "Doomwatch" episode "No Room for Error". Finally the "Blake's 7" episode "Space Fall" (for which we had already recorded an ICT 1301) also has panels from a Sperry Univac 9400 and, making its Starring-the-Computer debut, the Sperry UNIVAC 9200/9300.

Recently I've daydreamed about making a few panels from the IBM System/360 consoles as working input devices sized to sit on a home office desk or on a side table next to a sofa. In my daydream they are used as home automation, home theater, and live-streaming control surfaces.

Heute schon mal KBytes gezählt? Vor 60 Jahren war das noch notwendig, als IBM sein System/360 vorstellte. 8 KByte RAM, 8 MByte Speicher, also stolze 8 Millionen Zeichen. Für manche Firma damals der Einstieg in die Computerei.
