Don’t miss the presentation of Prof Daniel Utz @dnlutz today at #Symbol24.
In his talk Beyond Unicode – Emoji and other signs, he will probably also mention the #OpenMoji project that he runs together with Benedikt Groß at HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd.

OpenMoji by Benedikt Groß & Daniel Utz

Open source emojis for designers, developers and everyone else, because many emojis have unclear copyright statuses or live behind a paywall.

Today we will present the website @SocietyOfSigns at #Symbol24 13:50 CET.

We hid a little bombshell in the presentation for the Emoji researchers. 💣😱

While the consensus is, that Shigetaka Kurita invented Emoji while working at NTT DoCoMo in 1999, that also granted him a place in the #MoMa, Matt Stephton @gingerbeardman found full sets of emojis in Japanese organizers, dating back to 1988.

Emoji History: Before NTT

While Shigetaka Kurita is widely regarded as the inventor of Emoji, thanks to the set he created at NTT DoCoMo in 1999, Matt Sephton found some emojis in Japanese organisers predating them by a lot.
