@jessta I agree, installing accessible tram stops in Sydney Road is necessary and overdue. The ideal time is when designing and building protected cycling lanes, because this leads to an integrated and safe solution.
Looking at the proposed "detour cycling routes" offered as alternatives in 2028 during the temporary shutdown of Upfield bike path, it appears that the government is trying to make the best of a bad situation.
Those "best" solutions are awful for usability, speed, connections, not to mention the amenity of residential streets. I agree with Bicycle Network chief executive, Alison McCormack. I don't foresee a high rate of adoption. And, arguably, that's bad for everyone.
The argument from conservatives that they don't want to remove a few car parks to save the lives of cyclists because "it's bad for business" is untrue. It's been proven by research time and time again in many places around the world. The demand that the government "listen to all stakeholders" fails to recognise that we've been through all this before, and yes they had their opinions heard last time around. It's just a time-wasting distraction, and the longer we wait, the more cyclists are going to get injured or killed by people driving cars dangerously.
The obvious and intelligent option is for the government pulls their finger out and gets to work quickly to build protected bike lanes on Sydney Road

Thank YOU so much for coming along to Critical Mass Sydney Road on Thur 26 Sept, despite being chilly, we showed that can Sydney Road be fun and safe.
Sadly Gabrielle Williams MP didn't accept Tim Reads kind invitation to attend, but thank you to Christian Astourian, Tim Read MP, Aaron Moon, Ruth Jelley, Liz Irwin, Nik Dow & Nick Zull for speaking at Warr Park. We have plans over the summer to bring more fun to Melbourne's streets, so stay tuned, in the meantime get involved with your local bicycle user group and active transport advocates

On this weeks program Chris catches up with Geoff Smart from Back2Bikes including St Kilda protected lanes, council elections and his recent observations of riding in Copenhagen. Geoff talks about recent activities at Back2Bikes, volunteers, working with over fifty community partners, community pop up bike services, donating, refurbishing bikes and a recent article, Sustainability Victoria: Guide to running a bicycle repair and recyclers program.
Every time a car does a parallel park on #SydneyRoad it holds up the movement of all vehicles: cars, delivery trucks, trams and bicycles. Oversized utes doubly so as they need more room to manoeuvre and a larger parking space. Sydney Road needs to be revitalised to prioritise vehicle movement, as well as more pedestrian and cycling space and opportunities to Green the Sydney Road Corridor with canopy trees and vegetation to provide shade and reduce the #UrbanHeatIslandEffect that is exacerbated by global warming.
State government Department of Transport planners and local politicians should be looking at what Paris has done in recent years regarding #activetransport prioritisation and greening city streets, to create a more liveable, friendly and safe environment through Brunswick and Coburg.
Also Prioritisation of accessible tram stops is an essential part of upgrading Sydney Road.
Thatβs our thoughts on #SydneyRoad as #Chihuahuas who need to cycle along Sydney Road to get to businesses there, and as #ChihuahuasForClimateAction
