TIL that the Swiss railways uses different announcement jingles, depending on which language region you're in. And each jingle corresponds to the language's acronym for the railway company, interpreted as German note names:
- German: Es-B-B (Es = E♭, B = B♭)
- French: C-F-F
- Italian: F-F-Es (Es = E♭)
After a tour at a Traffic Control Center of the Swiss Railways in December, I was lucky enough to be able to organize a tour at the Central Control Center of SBB Energy, where they control its own high-voltage grid for the train infrastructure.
From here they check/control/plan the power consumption and requirements of the (almost) complete Swiss train infrastructure power grid, 24x7.
Because of the timetable where lots of trains arrive and depart on the large train station close after each other, the power consumption peaks are high (raise/drop of required power of 150-200 MW in 15-30 seconds).
Again very impressive to see how complex such an area is, which on itself is "only" a part from an even larger complex environment.
Was able to get a spot in a "guided tour" at a Traffic Control Center of the Swiss Railways today. Very interesting and super impressive. Of course I knew letting a couple of trains ride at world class level was not "without a couple of challenges", but oh my, what an ultra complex environment. 🙌
