“So manifold are our interests in life that it is not uncommon, on the self same occasion, for the foundations of a happiness which does not yet exist to be laid down simultaneously with the aggravation of a grief from which we are still suffering.” #MarcelProust #SwannsWay
Delightful from #Proust (#SwannsWay #Combray):
« In the next room I could hear my aunt talking quietly to herself. She never spoke save in low tones, because she believed that there was something broken in her head and floating lose there ».

I’ve always been slightly surprised that #Proust takes such a #materialistic view of such phenomena as smells, and recollections. Worth comparing #SwannsWay from #Combray with #Bernanos’ outstanding grim description: « Ma paroisse est dévorer par l’ennui » (a kind of lifeless, ‘cancerous’ boredom, or spiritual indirection). We shouldn’t forget #GeorgesBernanos for all sorts of reasons.

Since starting #SwannsWay by #Proust, I've been searching around the novel in ever increasing circles, looking for anything that might in any way connect with In Search of Lost Time. This article is not very connected, but it does talk about the brain and the experienced writer, which is interesting.

Remember when you were little and just learning how to write? Just writing your name was a huge accomplishment. Yet with practice, it became much easier.

A facsimile of James Grieve's 1982 translation of Swann's Way. When the pdf is loaded it shows 180pp. but panic not, it's actually pp. 346. The facsimile has been scanned 2 pages at a time évidemment....).

Heading towards an original Moncrieff vs. James Grieve vs. Lydia Davis using the most entertaining sections of the Verdurins to see what's what. Cheating, its searches of e-versions with Davis book open...

Hi,

There are many sources on this lit. scandal but it would be good to read this.

Is there an English translation of it? Or a text version that can be roughly translated with an online translator?

I'm not much gone on involuntary memory. Most of the stuff we trawl up from the subconscious seems to be stimulated by something.

Proust must mean as we go about our lives, acting, talking seeing, thinking, things sudden pop up. That is unquestionably true.

Going by my own recollections - involuntary or willed - they are mostly visual, not olfactory or auditory - to be expected as vision is the predominant sense, reflected in the large vision area in the brain.

The Guermantes Way and The Meseglise
Way

"But, above all, I set between them, far more distinctly than the mere distance in miles and yards and inches which separated one from the other, the distance that there was between the two parts of my brain in which I used to think of them, one of those distances of the mind which time serves only to lengthen, which separate things irremediably from one another, keeping them for ever upon different planes..."

Sending you Mme Verdurin energy in turning down New Year's invitations.
