One of my favorite sustainable swaps I have made this year is using biodegradable/compostable cellulose sponges for washing dishes. These are eco-friendly and will break down when you are done with them. Typical kitchen sponges are made using plastics, such as polyester or polyurethane. These are non-recycleable and don't biodegrade, so imagine if everyone made the change to bio sponges! Super exciting.
So the ones I got are by bioGO and they are 12 for $16, which does seem expensive, but I am averaging a one-month life span per sponge, some lasting longer, with constant use and for me that is very doable. Other sponges are cheaper, but they seem to last only a couple of weeks for me. So the choice is clear.
I ask you to consider making this swap and trying it out to reduce your environmental impact. Less plastics in landfill are always a good thing. As always, any suggestion I make for sustainable swaps is dependent on your ability to make it. I encourage it, but I understand that this is not always an option for everyone. I also encourage people to look into other ways they can reduce their einvironmental impact in other ways. We really are beyond a crossroads and climate change is not going to stop, we have to adapt, mitigate and just do what we can. And another way to do that is to look into a plant-based diet, among other things.
