right now Granit Xhaka, #Sunderland captain, leads team Switzerland onto a Levi's stadium grass - same place where the Detroit #Lions lost the NFC final, stopping just one step away from the Superbowl...
an unexpected crossover between my fandoms.

At the end of the 19th century, Ordnance Survey maps had this rocky outcrop on the beach at Ryhope in NE England marked as 'Jane Jiveson's Rock', when it was still attached to the cliffs.
In the early years of the 20th century, it became a separate feature with the smaller clump of rock on the right topped with a prominent stack of boulder clay.
It has always intrigued me how the rock acquired its OS map name.
Entering 'Jane Jiveson' into the search box of a popular genealogical website comes up with just one match and even then, it is not 100%.
The nearest match is a 'Mary Jane Jiveson' who was born in Falmouth, Cornwall in 1852 and 'Jiveson' was her married name.
In fact, there is no person recorded as ever being called 'Jane Jiveson' or even with variations in the spelling of the name, with the surname 'Jiveson' seemingly extremely rare!

At this time of the year, when the sun shines, this is such a gorgeous spot.
This Hylton Dene Pond, Sunderland in NE England and was only created in 1995 as part of the Castletown Regeneration Programme.
You could be forgiven if its not somewhere you have visited as it is ever so slightly hidden.
I gather it is well-known to locals and a particularly popular spot for anglers, the pond having been stocked with 7 species of course fish.
The water filling the pond comes from the Hylton Dene Burn and the wooded dene itself can be explored all the way up to Hylton Castle.

Spanning the River Wear near Penshaw, Sunderland in NE England, the Victoria Viaduct, was originally known as the Victoria Bridge.
Based upon the Alcántara Bridge in Spain and it was completed on 28 June 1838, the date of the coronation of Queen Victoria.
When it opened, it was one of the largest bridges in Europe.
Although the last scheduled passenger trains to run on the line were in 1964, diverted passenger trains continued to use it.
The viaduct was still being used by freight trains up until 1991, but after that, the line was mothballed and finally closed in 2012.
The viaduct was grade II* listed in 1985 and in more recent years has become the focus of an extension to the Tyne & Wear Metro.

The power and the glory – looks like a stormy winter's day down on the seafront promenade near Seaburn's Cat & Dog Steps Beach in Sunderland, NE England.
Actually it is not and in fact it was on this day exactly ten years ago in 'flaming June' 2016.
For one man and his doggy chum, they were experiencing the fury up close at a time of the year the beach is more normally associated with family picnics, putting on the sun cream and making sand castles.

Another Sunderland view from a couple of days ago, taken on the way back from photographing Keel Crossing at riverside level.
Dominating the view and leading into Sunderland's East End are the Lambton, Londonderry and Lumley Towers, which overlook High Street East.
All three tower blocks are earmarked for demolition, once the residents have been relocated.
They have been a fixture of the East End landscape since the 1960's, so it will be strange to eventually not have their dominating presence part of the area's landscape.
Look a little closely in the gap between the first two tower blocks and just visible is the original parish church of Sunderland, Holy Trinity.
